If Roy Jones had fought and beaten Calzaghe at SMW, he'd be the undisputed GOAT at the weight, with wins over Toney and Calzaghe.

The RING belt and lineal title are not the same thing.

As far as vacated/stripped, if the champ doesn't lose his title in the ring, by voluntarily vacating it, or by being stripped for not defending against a #1 challenger then it hardly makes sense to credit a fighter for defending another man's belt.

I don't credit Jones for defending the RING belt because unlike everyone after him, Roy never WON the RING belt. It was simply given to him.

When it comes to Roy Jones, I can't think of any fighter in history who was credited with accomplishing so many things that he didn't accomplish.

WBC Title: Totally negated. Rocchigiani was reinstated until he lost to DM, but Roy was never un-instated nor was DM given the belt that he technically won from Rocchigiani. It's a mess.

WBA/IBF: Sure, he 'won them in the ring' but do you really think they weren't stripped/forcibly vacated just to hand them to Roy via weaklings? I think it's pretty clear.

RING Title: They just up and created it and handed it to him even though the real champ was clearly DM. It was totally wrong.

HW Title: Lewis never lost it, Ruiz 'won' it by cheating for 36 rounds, and then Jones poached it off him because he totally sucked. Big deal.

Bottom line is Calzaghe won his titles in the ring, defended them, and beat the best in both of his divisions. Jones has ONE creditable accomplishment, which was beating Toney. Roy, his team, his daddy, the sanctioning bodies, and HBO were all more interested in LOOKING like the man than actually BEING the man.

    Only problem with that was

    1. He'd never have fought him
    2. He'd never have beaten him

    Really?

DM vacated the IBF for two reasons, He didn't wan't to face the mighty Guthrie in a months time, and Kohl didn't want to deal with Guthrie, as you said because he was mistaken thinking he was a Don King fighter.

It was given to him because the Ring like many others following the sport at the time felt he was not only the best fighter in LHW, but the best fighter alive, period. But you said you were not watching boxing back then, so I don't expect you to understand that.

Call it what you want, but he was a 4 weight world champion.. That is an impressive feat no matter how you haters want to spin it...

I didn't agree with the stripping of Rocchigiani, and I agree that was a mess.

That is your opinion.. But I wouldn't really consider top 10 rated LHWs weaklings.. DM was fighting most of the weaklings and Jones leftovers in Germany.

Again, if it was DM's belt, then it would have eventually went to Erdei who would be the rightful owner and never Calzaghe's.. So if you are going to be critical of Roy "defending other men's belts" you shouldn't credit Calzaghe as a two weight champ.. That is where your bias really sticks out like a sore thumb.
It's too bad you can't appreciate a former JMW dominating a top 5 HW.

Here is where you get all tied up again... You credit Calzaghe for beating the best at LHW, but don't credit Jones for beating Tarver(who was the #1 LHW after DM lost.) Hopkins became the best at LHW, by beating Tarver who beat Roy..

Joe's claim to LHW fame was through the lineage of that Ring belt that you don't credit Roy for defending or being the rightful owner... You can't have it both ways.

    School is out of session.:good

Unfortunately, such titles are not meant to be based on opinion.

Adrien Broner is a 3-weight world champion and will most likely have his 4th by the end of the year. I'm still not impressed.

By the time Calzaghe beat Hopkins the RING belt was in the hands of the best in the division. The LINEAL belt was with Erdei, but nobody thought he was the best. Calzaghe beat the best in the division to claim the RING belt. Jones...had it handed to him, though AFTER DM lost Jones was clearly the #1 fighter in the division until Tarver beat him.

Calzaghe was clearly the best at SMW and LHW.

For most of Roy's time at LHW, it was unclear whether he was the best. After DM lost, that changed.

    Possibly.

But nobody knows what would have happened if Roy had beaten him at SMW.

Would Joe have remained at the weight?

Would he have moved up to LHW sooner?

    ANOTHER merged thread?

Why not just rename the site 'Merged-Thread side Boxing'?

    It's a joke.
