Does anyone else here think that Cotto is extremely overrated?

When was this guys last meaningful win?

    Lets be real.

    2014

    KO Martinez.

Ok the guy was shot to ****. If you couldn't see that you are blind, or have an agenda to build cotto up, or have martinez not get fined for lying to the NYSAC about his health condition.

    2013

KO Delvin Rodrigez - This guy was hand picked for cotto to beat, its ok for a comeback fight, but not a meaningful win.

    2012

Lost to Mayweather - Looked good against mayweather, much better than many have

Lost to Austin Trout - A poor styles match up for cotto, but I think a true elite fighter should have been able to beat Trout

    ___________________________________________

    2011

    Stops Margarito

Marg had no meaningful wins at this point in a few years. He also had his eye damaged in the Pac fight. Look it up. The NYSAC almost refused to grant him a boxing license because of the procedures they had to do on his eye.

    Stops Mayorga

Do I even need to explain this? This guy was 37 and had taken his share of punishment. His last accomplishment was beating the also aging Vargas.

    ______________________________________

    2010

    Beats Yuri Foreman

This is probably his latest significant win. Yuri was a decent prospect. Far from elite.

Loses to Pac - gets stopped

Defeats Joshua Clottey - This is truely cotto's last SOLID win. Clottey was a good fighter, still is good. Just has gone inactive in the past few years.

As I demonstrated you have to look pretty far back to find a good win for Cotto. However, I do think just looking at wins isn't a way to judge a boxer. I honestly think Cotto's biggest credit in the past 3 years as a fighter was the fact that he actually put on somewhat of a fight against Mayweather. You guys are so high off of Cotto from the Martinez win its kind of ****ed up.

I'm not so sure I would call this guy elite anymore though.

He never stopped Toni LMAO toni was actually coming on strong he had his best round before they stopped it, they stopped the fight because toni had already had a problem with that eye in the pac fight and didn't want to risk getting it perfectly damaged his eye was worse in the pac fight and he took more of a beating and still was allowed to fight but he was not allowed to finish the cotto fight hmmm interesting.

Toni was never hurt once in any of the fights with cotto the second fight resembled the first one the only difference being is he came handicapped into the fight with that damged eye and cotto knew this and made his whole fight to target the eye so the ref could stop it.

Even more credit to my point.

Cotto hasn't done anything since 2009.

His wins have been over such poor opposition that his losses are honestly more of a credit than his W's. (actually the trout loss was pretty bad) Mainly refering to the fact he didn't get shut out by mayweather.

yeah as of his standing now, he is held in much higher regard than he should be considering his Martinez win means sweet FA and all he has is a tune up with Rodriguez and losses to Mayweather and Trout

Trout who suddenly became overrated when Canelo beat him

Pretty overrated. But he was a very good light welterweight and welterweight 2003-2010. He wasn't one of the top ten fighters of the decade, but was definitely top 20. He's definitely one of the most overpaid athletes in the sport, but he's proven he is a draw, and he's had so many high profile fights (Pac, May, Martinez, Mosley) that everyone knows who he is. He's 17-4 in title fights, so he's not chopped liver, but that business with Martinez was a boxing miracle where Sergio showed up crippled for the fight.

He has been. I think the poll which rated him good to very good shows where he belongs. He might make the HoF only because of his popularity. I don't understand why he's so popular. He's the whiniest sore loser in boxing and always blames his coach.

He hasn't accomplished much lately but he also isn't elite IMO. His run at 154 and above is difficult because he's fighting guys that are stylistically tough for him (bar Rodriguez). Still a really good fighter but he's taking the safe road lately and looking to cash out.

Depends on who is doing the rating.

Some people underrate him, others overrate him. He was getting overrated when people claimed he was an ATG based on being the first Puerto Rican fighter to win titles in 4 divisions. Do people actually take into context whom he beat for those titles & how many titles there are nowadays?

Overall, he's a very good fighter.

He did well with Pac when he fought on the back foot. Also his "win" against Clottey was quite questionable.

Before being stopped by Margo he beat the **** out of him.

I agree that the W over clottey is arguable .

It also says a lot about Clottey that he could not fully take advantage over a partially blind Cotto for the majority of the fight and he still struggled .

Please, this whole board thinks he's overrated, except for me, Buckdacious and a small handful of other guys. Not coincidentally, we're also the only ones who knew he was going to destroy Sergio.
