    And Toney went up to Cruiser and beat an outstanding fighter in Jirov, and went up to Heavyweight to KO Holyfield...

    It will be a cold day in hell probably before GGG, moves up to beat a HOF Heavyweight:-(

    The more i think about it the crazier this thread get's were comparing an HBO hype machine, who's got a resume full of taxi drivers and tomato cans, against a guy who was in the ring with multiple champions and HOF men, and had a 25 year career, crazy:nut

    Well there's no direct comparison except that we're imaging them having a fight. It's true that Toney beat some good bigger men, and that that won't happen to Golovkin, but it's also true that it wouldn't happen to Mike McCallum who boxed a draw with Toney the year this fight is made, Reggie Johnson who was literally one swing round away from getting a result from Toney the year this fight was made, or Dave Tiberi, who clearly beat Toney a year after this fight was made. Nor would it happen to Mike Nunn, clearly ahead on the cards when stopped by James Toney.

    So, while obviously much greater by at the minute reckoning, Toney was also vulnerable head-to-head at middleweight. Hence, taking on a fighter like Golovkin should be interesting.

    Miles off.

    I rate GGG, but his best win is Matthew Macklin.

    James's best win at MW is Nunn.

    Night and day in difference!

    James fought and beat better opposition than GGG at MW.

    Yeah, but fighters lose all the time to fighters who have worse resumes.

    I mean that literally. It happens every year, a lot.

    Oh I know, and James was known for it.

    But the very best JT would bamboozle GGG on his best day.

    I'd pick Jermaine Taylor of 2005 to beat the current GGG as well.

    JT ended Hopkins 10 year reign, was super athletic and had a piston jab.

    GGG has beat Macklin and Geale. Wow.

    I think Taylor would give Toney a lot of problems. Toney would need to take over later in the fight.

    Yeah, I mean Golovkin's resume is a long way off - there's no denying that.

    But I'd suggest it's considerably better than Buster Douglas's before Douglas beat Tyson, or Naoya Inoue's before Inoue beat Hernandez - or a literal thousand other examples you might care to chose.

    It's understood and a given that Toney has a better resume than Toney - it's also only one factor in deciding the winner here, and not a defining one.

    Golovkin would absolutely knock the brains out of Taylor. He would present a lot of problems for Toney, but there are wrinkles to James that just might save him. Very close decision for the real JT.

    As an offshoot I do hope Golovkin secures meaningful bouts, asap. He's white hot right now but approaching his 33rd year. You get the sense he could fight once a month the way he marches out of the ring, fresh-faced, grinning. There's a good bit in reserve. Let's hope the heavy artillery isn't wasted on mediocre targets.
