No the US invasion of Iraq was not military expansion. Does that mean that is was a just war? Of course not. I think there were many reasons behind the invasion, oil being one of them. Saddam challanging their influnce in the region another.

What are you even taking about? I never maid any claim condoning US military agression. Bush ought to be prosecuted for war crimes in my opinion. Who is defending the alliance with the Saudis?

Did the USSR occupy the whole of Eastern Europe in that era any more than the USA occupied Western Europe ?

I'll go out on a limb and say the medieval backward country Afghanistan lost out when it rejected its commies and socialists.

    Of course it was.
The US expanded its territorial power through military means.
You can't invade and change the regime of a sovereign country without expanding your own power and influence.

Well, since the US withdrew its occupation peacefully shortly after the war while the Soviet maintained its occupation for almost another 45 years, and crushed two popular uprisings in the process, until the occupation was no longer deemed tenable, I'd definitely say so.

Perhaps, and perhaps not. Had it become another Vietnam or Cuba, I'd say so, but not if had become another North Korea.

That Vietnam and Cuba is the "nice" communist countries (and Vietnam isn't really very communist at all anymore) says it all really.

Have to be frank here, Burt. When you name Ali, Sharpton, Jackson and effing Obama in the same sentence as Mao and Stalin you really risk coming off like somewhat of a bigot and an idiot. It's about as smart as naming Bush jr and Cheney in the same sentence as Hitler. If you can't see that, it's really too sad.

No it wasnt. They did not expand their territory. They tried, as you claim, to expand their influence and power (although I think it is fair to say that it had the reverse effect), but that is not what military expansion means. Please note, Im not defending the invasion. Im saying that the US had many reasons for invading, power, influence, rescources and so on, but territorial expansion was not one of them.

You fought in World War II?

I thought you were attending all of Rocky Graziano's fights in his "prelim" days and sitting ringside for the Rocky-Billy Arnold fight in March 1945? Rocky's prelim days up to the Billy Arnold fight make up nearly all the years the U.S. was involved in WWII.

What war did you fight in?

I don't have to answer your personal query, but I was drafted
    and served in the Navy near the end of WW2, but I tried to volunteer in 1944 abouts. I was born in Jan, 1927 do the math;
The first time I saw Rocky Graziano was in Stillmans Gym in
1943 and a week or so after saw Rocky along with my dad, fight a prelim in St. Nicholas Arena. Saw him many times after when I was available...I saw the Graziano /Billy Arnold fight in 1945, but my first main event pro fight my dad took me to was in 1942 at the old St Nicks where the great young Beau Jack beat a tough East side friend of Graziano's, Terry Young. I was the youngest of my friends all who were drafted in the Navy. A few didn't come back. I got hitched June 29, 1946, alas it didn't last long...

B, when did I compare the above with Mao and Stalin ? To hurt me you have to pile on lies ? If I mentioned the above four it is in the context of American liberals running AMOK in our society.
So B, you did what you intended to do which is to infer I am a racist and I would compare American liberals, with all their phony
tactics with mass murderer's. To shame...

So, you were in grade school when World War II began and you were finishing high school and still in New York when it ended. And you didn't fight in any war. Got it.

Everyone has friends who died in a war. Even "commies."

Tom Brokaw coined the phrase "the greatest generation" about his parents' generation - those who were adults during the Great Depression and WWII and had to raise and support families during that time. Not the people who were kids during that time.

Ok. Fair enough and good to hear.

I said "you risk coming off as a bigot" when naming them in the same sentence just because I really didn't want to believe you'd put them on the same level. But good to have that cleared up, anyhow.:good

Hey D, who ever said I saw battle ? I tried to get in the service when I was 17 as all my friends were in. I failed the physical but when I was 18 I was drafted and went into the Navy. So now you want to demean me because of my date I was born ? I served when called, and tried to volunteer when I was 17, and I will not apologize to haters like you because I was in High School when drafted...I lost my opportunity for college when discharged and a chance to get in a trade union...I through no fault of my own was not a hero in battle, but even at my advanced age.I'd take you on.

I thought the US had military bases in western Europe throughout the cold war. West Germany especially.

Well, North Korea is a special case.
It owes much of its character to archaic Korean traditions of cult leadership and worship of dynasties.
Rather than Marxism or the utopian enlightenment ideals that spawned communism.

But, yes, it's possible that Afghan socialism could have become just as polluted/perverted.

Yes, communism is a bit of a dud compared to some of the advanced liberal democracies.

But, to be fair, I think communist states needs to be judged against what existed in those countries before they came to power.
    Tsarist Russia ..... French empire's Indochina colony ... a backward China .... Batista's Cuba. ... etc.

In many ways, the communist states modernised backward superstitious countries, eliminated some of the worst aspects of those cultures, and dragged them out of the dark ages.

You're on here bragging about being a part of "the greatest generation" - when you weren't - and insulting people because "friends" you knew died in war - when everyone has friends and family who died in a war or likely will - and acting like people who don't agree with your political views are somehow not on your level.

Who are you to talk down to people here? This is an international board.

Plus, you're a hypocrite. Enjoy your Social Security checks and Medicare ... Commie.:hi:
