Excellent prospect. One of the best in the world regardless of weight, IMO.

Nathan Cleverly sparred him a quite a few times when Quigley was still an amateur and he was very impressed by him.

'In the first part of On The Road To Robin Krasniqi, Team Clev speak to Nathan Cleverly about one of his chief sparring partners, Ireland’s up and coming middleweight Jason Quigley who has sparred the Welshman ahead of the fifth defence of his WBO world light-heavyweight title on March 16th at Wembley Arena against Robin Krasniqi.

Quigley’s amateur record includes over 120 wins and he’s enjoyed outstanding high points in his career that include; two European Championships gold medals at Youth and U23 level, an undefeated run for the Los Angeles Matadors in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) and a 13-5 win over Great Britain’s Olympic bronze medallist Anthony Ogogo at Finland’s Gee Bee tournament.

Cleverly detailed how the latest spar was arranged, “Jason asked can I help him out with sparring with his preparation for the Irish championships. He’s a top class amateur, well a world class amateur. He’s an exceptional talent, he has a lot of sides to his game. He flies over here, takes himself away from his home and that shows his dedication and he has a great coach in his Dad, Connor.”

After his latest week of sparring with Cleverly, Quigley embarked on the Irish Elite Senior Championships where he picked up another title win and on the way he beat Ireland’s 2012 Olympic captain Darren O’Neill, gaining revenge for a 2011 loss.

Quigley is trained by his father Conor out of the Finn Valley Amateur Boxing Club in County Donegal and he’s developed a well-rounded style that allows him to box and counterpunch but he has the steel to stand and fight when he’s needed to.

It’s something Cleverly admires, he said, “He came over in the early stages of my training and it’s great sparring. He’s very enthusiastic, sharp, a great counter puncher too. You have to be on your toes when you’re in with him, it was a good start for my training camp.”

“Jason came over in the summer and I didn’t know too much about him at the time, I’d heard his name here and there and that was pretty much it. We had a week of sparring then, we did four spars I think and I knew I’d use him again then, he really impressed me then.”

if you watch the video of that sparring session Quigley is given Cleverely a bit of a lesson , he can't lay a glove on him dispite his considerable size and experince advantage

He catches him a quite a few times, but yeah, very impressive by Quigley. He's very talented and has tons of potential. He'd smash Eubank Jr. right now. Love to see that.

The letter G also features in his name, his home city (Donegal), twice in the nicknames of the city he now lives in and trains out of ('The Big Orange' and 'City of Angels), the promotional outfit he's signed with (Golden Boy), and it also features a staggering three times in the name of the venue he made his debut in (MGM Grand Garden Arena). That's a spectacular array of Gs. He's almost up there with Golovkin on the G front. There's no way this kid is not destined for the top.

Will there be future pictures of him wearing a spiffing 19th century emsemble, complete with a cane and monicle?

    Generally looking dandy-esque?

I was actually going to do one a few months back but I decided against it as some of your countrymen seemed to take offence to me laying claim to your countries best boxers. lol

Yeah Joe is a machine and has got great skills but I just think Quigleys technical skills were a bit more polished than Joe.

Is that true? An additional two extras G's onto his already very impressive G tally would be total badass. However, with a nickname as awful as that they come at an awfully high expense.

ya joes technique sometimes looks very unortodox and sloppy kind of like calzaghe. I think he relies on natural talent to much rather than hard work

and you know what they say, hard work beats talent if talent doesn't work hard

He's a natural outside boxer, but ive seen him fight on the inside pretty well against some good close quarter boxers, like the big puncher Artem Chebotarev. Luckily enough he's only 23 so he has plenty of time to develop his man strength, punching power and his pro style.

One good thing about Quigley is that he is actually tough mofo in the ring, even if he looks like a kid. He's not afraid of the rough stuff in the ring and can go to war if needs be. He fought some big punchers in the am's and he took their punches well, so he seems to have a good chin to.
