Jerry ****ey stopped 40 y o Lyle in 1 round with a bodypunch. How do you think the fight would've ended if they both were at their peak? I'd go with Lyle cracking ****ey suspect chin after 5-6 competitive rounds (while Jerry may be ahead on cards)
Gerry C00ney wasn't much for taking punishment. But Lyle's power can also be overrated at times, and in truth I'm not sure how many ranked or quality opponents he ever stopped. He did manage to force a stoppage over Earnie Shavers but that had more to do with Earnie gassing out early and Ron received his fair share of licks prior to that point. Looking back at Lyle's outing with Jerry Quarry one can see Jerry landing all kinds of decent shots on the inside to the body and head. Can't help but think that some of those left upper cuts to the body ( which is what did Lyle in when they actually fought ) would take effect. I guess it comes down to who gets off to the better start and is able to land with more regularity. I'm not sold on either man one way or the other.
Yeah, seeing as his got off the deck to stop Shavers, and was also on the verge of beating FOREMAN, you'd have to say he'd win a slugfest with C00ney.
Gerry hit Lyle with a hook that broke Lyle's rib. Unless Lyle's rib bone was stronger in his prime, I don't see how the result changes. It's not like Gerry outboxed Lyle. He slugged him in the rib and broke it. If he could break Lyle's rib in 1980, he could certainly do it in 1975 or 1976. Odd question to ask.
The question still remains if prime Lyle allows Jerry find the ribs with his hook. And if ****ey will be able to come through Ron punches. I seriously doubt it
Yes, his rib bone was stronger. That's what happens to a washed-up fighter, he gets weaker all over. Also, obviously, as already pointed out, a prime Lyle is infinitely more likely to avoid such a blow or not take it full impact. And more likely to do damage to, a weaken, C00ney before C00ney does it to him.
You seriously doubt Gerry (with a "G" not a "J") Co*ney wouldn't land a hook to Ron Lyle's ribs in Ron Lyle's prime? Why? He didn't catch Lyle with a "lucky punch." That was Gerry's favorite punch. And Ron Lyle wasn't known as a defensive genius ever. No matter when they fought, Gerry would be able to hit Lyle with that shot. He didn't outbox Lyle. He didn't switch to lefty and confuse him. Lyle wasn't sick. There were no tricks. He punched him in the rib and broke it. He could've done that to an amateur Lyle, a rising prospect Lyle, a prime Lyle or a late 30s Lyle.
The rising contender Gerry C00ney would've beaten Ron Lyle and Jimmy Young and Ken Norton any time in their careers. He didn't beat them because they were old. He beat them with his power and (against Young) with the jab and hook. Norton didn't take punches better when he was younger. Lyle's rib wasn't stronger in 1976 than it was in 1980. Jimmy Young got knocked and owned by guys before he fought C00ney. C00ney's style, combined with his height, reach and power, was all wrong for them. That's all. C00ney couldn't beat a lot of people, but he'd always beat those guys.
Does it make sence then that Michael Spinks would've destroyed Gerry ****ey at any point of his career?
At any point of C00ney's career, sure. It's not like C00ney had a better defense when he was younger. At any point in Spinks' career, no. He needed to be a full grown heavyweight to do that.
It might.. But frankly I'd rather see ****ey not coming in after only seeing one round of boxing action in two and a half year with a tire around his waste and a marked history of drug and alcohol use.. These things weren't the case for Norton, Lyle and Young, who were beaten much quicker against C00ney than C00ney was against Spinks.
