What is the benefits with the wide hooks, is it better to throw wide hooks or just have tight defence and throw only short hooks? What about tactic throwing constantly straight punches like Jack Dempsey used to do? That's massive weapon if you develop power to your one-two's like Dempsey.
A varied attack is generally always better, so long as your form is correct. Good to have more tools in your belt. There is a time and place for each punch in the book. Some are not appropriate for every occasion but can be just what the doctor ordered in the right situation. (looking at you, uppercut)
There's really not much more to say than this. Just make sure when you throw a wide hook, you're not going too wide and straight-arming it. That's a quick way to f-up your elbow.
1. you need to know to move your head first when throwing wide otherwise you might end up inhaling your opponent's hook before your hook lands. 2. Wide punches are usually thrown as "cut off punches" ( to make the opponent stop moving sideways ) 3. you're going to have to use wider hooks to go around your opponent's guard or to motivate him to block the wide punch so you have an opening for another punch. 4. shorter hooks are more likely to do some mean damage on your opponent. Less reaction time and less likely to see the punch coming. Get good with a short hook and ye shall be a dangerous man.
from my personal experience i have trouble landing straights but my winging left hook or right hook lands close to 100% of the time
A wide hook doesn't have any power on it. You can throw a long hook, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't keep it short and compact. What you're referring to is a swing. Maidana throws swings. A swing is not a proper punch. It's a garbage punch.
Pacquaio throws straight punches like that and they do plenty of damage. A lot of this Mayweather shlt talk has overshadowed the greatest offensive fighter of this generation. Hopefully, that will come to an end on May 2nd.
Why wouldn't a wide hook have any power? Foreman almost exclusively threw wide hooks. Maidana, Mayorga etc. A wide punch is less likely to land and do damage but they are more powerful if anything. All punches are throws and the wider a punch the more torque you can get on it. That's why a lot of fighters get wild when they have a guy hurt.
Any shot thrown that lands outside the perimeter, of the shoulders, will lose power and put you of balance.
That's not true at all, a punch with your entire body on it is the most powerful punch you can throw. A shovel hook is the best possible hook you can throw, but all of your punches should be short even the long punches. Do Klitschko's hooks look wide to you? Do Tyson's punches look wide to you??? There is also a difference in mechanics. Maidana's punches are almost L shaped. They have no arc to them and you can see them coming. Dealt With, if you would ever show a video of you punching the bag like you said you were going to do and you had unbelievable power, I would be inclined to believe a lot of the bullshlt you say. I know how to punch. I know when I hit people some people would tell me later that it was the hardest they've ever been hit. I could tell how hard I hit by the sound that I made on the bag. I could compare myself because I wasn't a heavyweight, yet there were only two heavyweights I've ever met that could punch with the same impact as me. I didn't throw wide punches. And the guys that could punch hard did not throw wide punches. Then again, your definition of wide punches vs my definition of wide punches might be different. A wide punch is a swing to me. It's not even a punch. In my opinion, if you're really a good puncher, you should be able to hurt someone badly with a hook off the jab. That's a long hook, but by no means, is it a wide hook.
I'm assuming you're saying what you're saying in reference to Wilder. I don't know why Wilder swings so wide when he has his opponent hurt. If he would shorten those hooks up, he would have knocked out Stiverne. Those wild shots did not help him. Look at Foreman. Foreman had great power, probably better than Tyson's, but Tyson was a better puncher. Tyson kep his punches short.
Two different types of punches, but the trajectory still matters. Here is a wide punch vs a short punch. At 6.24. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eplLem4jPs A woman punches harder than a man.
Properly thrown a punch is nothing like a throw, and the wider the 'swing' or the arc of the punch, the less torque behind it. Most guys get wild when they hurt somebody because they get excited and forget- technique and even to breath.
