NO doubt .. he was murderously tough .. I'm just thinking he could be outpointed .. this is a blow up welter who took bombs from a prime Schmeling when he was well past his own best .. I'm not saying Walker gets stopped by any means, just possibly outpointed based on styles ..
I think that Mickey walker was a much better middleweight, than a welterweight! He was more experienced and stronger. Walker seems like one of those guys who have an indomitable will...the type that will fight to the end, and never ever quit. McCallum has better technique...Walker wouldn't like that jab, and he wouldn't like being countered with hard body shots when he lead with a right hand or left hook, which he demonstrates over and over...but on the other hand McCallum isn't going to like having his left arm clamped down and taken out of play on the inside...Walker knows how to fight...and that is the understatement of the day! Thsi would be very close. Wallker is rightfully looked at as an ATG. McCallum is very underrated IMO...I lean very slightly to Mike McCallum by close decision.
I DON'T have any problem with anyone picking Walker to win, but to say the guy is gonna stop MM is beyond stupid.
My apologies, when I got to the " overwhelms him " I WRONGLY assumed you meant a stoppage. (As that is what I generally take it to mean ) Apologies again.
Aside from the fact that the punch that beat Uzcudun ( after the bell to end the 8th round ) would have been a foul today ( and most likely got Walker a DQ ) no one is denying his toughness. You on the other hand seem more than willing to totally disregard McCallum's toughness, and surgeon like style. As I said, I have NO PROBLEM with anyone picking Walker over MM, but I DO have a problem with people saying he stops the Jamaican.
The punch that caused the cut was thrown after the bell to end the 8th round, as Uzcudun dropped his hands to return to his corner. The write up can be found in Associated Press.
Thank you I have read up on this fight. What is not in debate, is that the punch split open Uzcdun's eyebrow, like a rotten plum.
No it's because he was very good in each weight class but ultimately flawed against the more skilled boxers hence he lost against them. His power, speed and tenacity saw him beat some bigger men but fail against the best in each weight class. Walker ducked and rolled with the punches well enough and he was pretty quick but he wasn't that hard to hit against quicker opponents either
Expand upon this please! You are saying that he was able to beat the best in every wight class, from welterweight to heavyweight, but that he couldn't have hung in any of those divisions?
Well seeing as you replied directly to my post in which I completely dismissed the idea of ANY 147 / 160 pound fighter being able to stop MM, I assumed you were claiming he could. Perhaps I was wrong, eh?
No disrespect, but perhaps you ought to read his post again. He clearly wrote though Walker beat some bigger men " he FAILED " against the best in each division.
