How would he have done against the challangers of Louis' title? Abe Simon Al McCoy Arturo Godoy Billy Conn Bob Pastor Buddy Baer Gus Dorazio Harry Thomas Jack Roper Jersey Joe Walcott John Henry Lewis Johnny Davis Johnny Paychek Lou Nova Max Schmeling Nathan Mann Red Burman Tami Mauriello Tommy Farr Tony Galento Tony Musto
I'd pick the men highlighted in red to beat him. Especially Walcott and Schmeling. Too skilled and would probably cut him to pieces. While Quarry did well against big men who were punchers, I might have to favor Buddy Baer as well. The size and power disparity would be a lot for Quarry to deal with. The rest I'm not sure about.
Yeah, I've got to agree with you here...with the ones in red. Farr and Godoy would be tough fights for Jerry.
True. Farr was slick and hard to catch as were Conn and Pastor. Godoy was tough as nails. Some of these are tossups.
*Johnny Davis was not viewed as a title defense by contemporary observers such as Nat Fleischer. I think it silly for boxrec to view it as such. **on the question posed--I favor Schmeling, Walcott, and Conn strongly I also favor Pastor and Farr though less strongly Nova was somewhat like Quarry--somewhat of a head case who could come up with flat performances, but had talent. Nova was bigger than Quarry and could box. I favor him if he brings his A game and I think he most likely would. Buddy Baer's size and power would make him interesting, but he might be a bit overrated. I rate this one a toss-up. Quarry should be able to easily outbox Galento, but Jerry's penchant for getting into slugfests might lead him to play into Galento's strong suits. I favor Jerry if he fights his fight. Mauriello had an impressive record going into the Louis fight, but then went back very quickly. I would rate him a toss-up. Dorazio and Burman had their moments--I would favor Quarry but not having seen much of these men on film, I would rate them live underdogs. Simon just seems like a slow lug, but he was a natural 255 lbs. and so again the size difference might make this interesting. I favor Jerry. Godoy looks like Quarry should outbox him, but this is another one in which Quarry has to fight a smart fight. Godoy will be there until the final bell. Quarry should be favored over the rest.
I pretty much agree with your picks. The problem with Quarry was his tendency to fight the wrong fight. This would give the likes of Galento a chance of landing that winging left hook and possibly emulating Chuvalo's feat .
I think ony Walcott and Schmeling would be a questionalble win for Quarry. Baer and Simon would be bigger than Quarry, maybe Nova, but the skill level Quarry would have over each would be huge. Quarry would be bigger than just about everyone else on the list (kind of a oddity for Quarry), add Quarry's skill level, and he cleans house.
He loses to Conn, Pastor, Walcott, Henry Lewis, Schemling, and Godoy. While he should be favored over the rest, he likely will slip up at least once or twice.
Quarry is no Joe Louis Wow! Thanks for that! Lewis took the title shot as a pension plan, he was blind in one eye and should not have been fighting at all. Iron chin ? Lewis was dropped by Braddock and wobbled in several other fights including one with Willie Reddish,I'd say Quarry hit as hard as both of those. Now quit trying to project Lewis as a LHVy Chuvalo, you'll only look stupid!
