I recently watched Tyson Fury's latest victory, and got to thinking how would the likes of Buddy Baer, Abe Simon and Primo Carnera fare in the current Heavyweight division?

    They'd fit in just right.

I think Fury is probably on their kind of level although i get the feeling Fury is a little more susceptible to getting hit and hurt although maybe i just need to see him in there with a proven world class fighter? I've seen Buddy/Simon/Carnera in there against the very best and they got butchered - and i think Tyson Fury would get chopped up in similar fashion by a Joe Louis - i thought Cunningham schooled Fury and really made him look like abit of an amateur at times but he got away with it - and Cunningham flattened him at one point - maybe Fury will restore my faith in him against a Klit or a Haye or a Wilder? Who knows but if he doesn't he'll be no higher than those guys - Carnera was champ and Buddy had an awesome KO record which suggests they probably wouldve had that bit more pedigree than Tyson?

other than Lennox Lewis and the Klitschko's most of the big guys did not make the top in any era. Bulk does not pay dividends as we have seen in the Stiverne-Wilder fight and the recent Solis-Thompson fight. The Klitschko's and Lewis were outstanding amateurs and benefit from 12 rd distance but there were always conditioned, Bowe got hit too much and falls into the Willard, Primo bracket as far as success in the past IMO

Big guys fell short in the Dempsey, Louis and Marciano (rarely made the top 5 and lost to smaller men) era and even the Tyson era for the most part

I do believe that times have changed and Big men are getting better and taller and some decent ones in Wilder, Fury and others but I haven't seen anything that would make me believe that these men are much different from the Oafs of the past, Lewis and the Klitschko's are a different level but would also have serious problems with the likes of Louis, Dempsey, Walcott, Ali, Marciano, and others

The bigger men of previous eras such Willard, Carnera, Buddy Baer, etc were tough and had the physical size and strength of a lot of today's heavys. But the problem is that many of them did not know how to "fight big," where as Lewis, Bowe, the klits, etc did or do.

I agree Manny was the master of tall technique offense and defense, Bowe had talent but I see him getting outworked by the better average sized guys

I think Primo Carnera could have been a good fighter if managed and trained properly. Maybe some of his fights were fixed, I don't know. But he was an immensely big and strong man who showed that he had a jab and other skills from time to time. He was also capable of going many rounds and took a lot of Max Baer's best shots, while fighting with an injured ankle.

I don't know that it's right to call them oafs. They weren't great but for christsake Buddy Baer has 47 KOs, and a lot of common opponents with Joe Louis: Abe Simon, Tony Galento, Lee Savold, Nathan Mann, Al Delaney, Jack O'Dowd, etc. That ought to count for something.

In 1933 Primo Carnera had victories over Jack Sharkey, Paulino Uzcudun, and Ernie Schaaf. Do people consider them oafs or bad heavyweights?

Abe Simon actually is a bit of a bum, but even he has that victory over Jersey Joe Walcott.

Fury is far faster and lighter on his feet. He is just more gifted. Not saying that gifted always wins but despite his dorky physique Fury has quite a bit of athletic talent for such a big man.

Fury can box some. I think Carnera is better than he is though as he had some power and knew how to use his massive size.

Fury has more skill than Buddy Baer or Abe Simon.

I see Tyson Fury knocked cold when somebody good finally fights him. He doesn't have a prayer against Wlad. Think of the sound of glass shattering...and an exit similar to Jack Bodell vs Jerry Quarry...though may not as fast.

He's in the Buddy Baer category at best.

If he was from 1940 and in black and white film you would absolutely relish ridiculing his skills and boxing ability and LACK OF athletic talent.

Any of these guys could be very successful heavyweight contenders today.

Unfortunately when they wanted to get their hands on a title, they would have a big problem called Wladamir Klitschko.

You could steer any of these guys int the Ring top ten today.

    Easily.
