A question to Roy Jones Jnr fans about his win over J Toney

Toney Jones should be regarded as a highly regarded win. Toney struggled against Tiberi because of cramping but he clearly won. The crowd was biased for Tiberi. Jones Toney happened at the right time. Jones won his first strap at 160. And prime Jones would always beat prime Toney because of his speed.

And bias won't get you anywhere. You must always keep it real. Always

That is some serious G-Power for "The Newbridge Assasin" Joe Calzaghe

I would suspect the only two that had even a chance at beating Calzaghe would have been GGG or the G-Man himself..

No wonder Bernard "Ugly" Hopkins had to resort to cheating versus " The Italian Dragon" Joe Calzaghe.. Ugly knew he only had one G, and even with the 2 G's he still lost by 4 rounds.:yep:deal

 

But actually Hopkins vs. Calzaghe was for The Ring Light Heavyweight Championship.

I also believe Antonio "Magic Man" Tarver was stripped for trying to unify with Glen Johnson, which is why he wore the hideous crown into the ring making himself look like the G-less Flavor Flav.

Many considered Ugly to be the man of the division for beating "The Magic man", and followed that lineage ever since Dariusz was defeated by Julio Gonzalez.

Toney knew he blew the fight against Roy. It ate him up. All he wanted was a chance to prove it wasn't the real him.

After the fight Toney ballooned. He fought at cruiserweight. He got his act together and fought at light heavy because Jones made a noise about a rematch. Toney fought on, and waited, and waited. He ballooned after years of getting the cold shoulder.

The question is why didn't Roy fight him again? It's not like the guys Jones Jr was fighting at 175 were world beaters. Throughout Jones' career until Ruiz Toney was his highest payday. Why didn't Roy want it?

 

I'll clarify the bias as I knock points off a guy's standing if they start making demands that give them an advantage before they set foot in the ring.
Ali did it. Leonard did it. Oscar did it, Mayweather does it, and Jones Jr did it.

Call me old fashioned, but I just like a guy who gets in the ring and gets on with it.

 

I rate it so highly b/c Toney is considered an ATG win, thus making RJJ an ATG, which in turn defines Joe Calslappy's career b/c he beat the man who beat the man.

All things considered, I think it was a great win.

 

I always thought it was strange that James never mentioned wanting a rematch in his post fight interview after Roy.

Regarding why Roy didn't pursue it, he had nothing to prove, and they fought at different weights for the most part.

When Roy fought Mike McCallum in November, 1996, James was preparing to fight a rematch with Griffin, which he went on to lose. Then afterwards he went up to CW. Without being disrespectful to anyone, until James fought Jirov, he didn't really fight anyone noteworthy. Within that timeframe, Roy had unified the LHW division and then signed to fight Ruiz in 2002, after fights with Darius M and Bernard Hopkins failed to materialise. Then after Roy had beaten Ruiz and James had beaten Jirov, Roy wanted to fight Evander Holyfield. But Evander ended up fighting James instead, because he couldn't agree terms with Don King. After Roy couldn't secure a big money fight at HW, he signed to fight Tarver in September, 2003. So a rematch with James was only really viable early in 2003. It would have been nice. But I can't really blame Roy for wanting Evander instead. I think it would have grossed more money, and again, Roy had nothing to prove.

True, plus even though Toney I'm sure would have been willing for the rematch at HW, he was trying to land a catchweight bout with Hopkins at the time. After negotiations fell through with BHops team the Holyfield fight fell into his lap and vice versa. Credit to Tarver he generated a lot of public interest in that fight. I think he almost forced Roy's hand by making it a lucrative option and forcing fan opinion that Roy should move down to reclaim his LHW titles.

 

Yes, Tarver chased him hard, even crashing the Ruiz post fight press conference.
