Baer did not have the two-handed skills or the footwork to beat a fighter like Povetkin. He could not jab well enough, hook hard enough and go to the both sides of the body as well as Povetkin. Baer's guard and balance were also way too sloppy.

In modern boxing it does. Matter infact I give the Spartan hoplite a bigger chance against the modern day US marine then I got a 1930 heavyweight against a 2015 heavyweight

Becuase they not fightning bums who drink beer every day and got a full time job. They fighting fighters full time trained in modern techniqes and physical programs. In 1930 most boxers had another job beside boxing.

The very idea that a 1930 heavyweight could be succesfull in 2015 is absurd.

How many KOs did Baer have resulting from his left hand?

How many KOs does Povetkin have by way of his left hand?

Half a fighter versus a whole fighter.

    Povetkin KO2.
Blitzing a guy with 3 wins and 3 losses in 1944 doesn't mean that he'd be blitzing anyone today. :nono

Not to mention that today's heavyweights for the most part are different than what Louis fought. Louis just happened to be the first heavyweight with two-handed skills and good footwork and he was competing against a field of competitors that were largely limited to a powerful right hand and not much else. He would find himself fighting opponents who are not small cruiserweights and opponents whom he did not hold a significant technical advantage over.

Baer's skills and size are quite comparable to that of Marco Huck. And Huck did have success against an OBVIOUSLY undertrained Potvetkin.

That said, post Wlad Potevektin takes him out inside 4 rds. Baer didnt have Hucks chin.:good

So Bear was no better than the Ghost of Rahman? Who else has Povetkin put away in two rounds?

I think a spartan would probably kick a marines ass if it was hand to hand combat

    Probably.

A more apt comparison for combat sports is fencing as it shares a lot of the same principles with boxing.

The renaissance era fencers were a lot better 5 hundred years ago.

But this guy though a better example would be spears and machine guns.

As usual, we're on the same page.

And if Im reading your mind right, this thread was soley created to be a Klitschko hate thread.

    Enter HerolGee, Dinovelvet, Alien, etc.

The only guys who think 5'10 180 lb skillsless cavemen who drank beer by the gallon, liquor by the quart, and hotdogs by the dozen are ATGs, are klitschko haters.

Yet, these same ppl, praise Lennox Lewis as an ATG who's greatest win, BY FAR, is a TD6 Loss in which a headbutt opened a cut that he proceeded to shred to ribbons over the next 3 rds. :huh:huh:huh

I think you'd have a hard time convincing someone like Chris Kyle(RIP) that a 5'7, 165lb Trojan Warrior could beat him in hand to hand combat.

That said, the Spartans and Trojans were trained in hand to hand combat, but what would a guy like Kyle, or a prime Jesse Ventura be in pre-Rome Europe.

Pretty certain they'd be called the sons of Zeus. :thumbsup

Lol, recently seen the Galento vs Baer fight, pretty entertaining fight, even though it was dirty.

It's not really right comparing fighters from then and now. Fighters right now wouldn't be able to cope with the brutal 15 round wars of yesteryear.

It was just a lot tougher back then.

But with the HUGE gap in class, how would a fighter from then, taking shots one after another, last the 1st rd against someone even the calibre of Eddie Chambers. :-:)-:)-(
