Say Sharkey holds on and takes a narrow decision against Dempsey. How do you think Sharkey would get on with Tunney? And do you agree or disagree that this would settle who was the best HW technician of this era?
I like Tunney by dec in a competitive fight. I already consider Tunney the better technician but if Sharkey had won this fight it may swing in his favor.
I agree that it could decide the best technician of the era and am one of those who really like Jack and his skills but I fear Tunney would pay hell with his fragile temperament.
One guy fought much better heavyweights and the other guy was more consistent and disciplined .. you'd have to go with Gene but it would have been a more telling fight for Tunney at heavyweight than his b.s. finale against Heeney
I've always wished that Tunney wasn't in such a hurry to escape boxing. I wish he had hung around and beaten both Schmeling and Sharkey....it would have enhanced his legacy.
rc. Tunney in the bout with Jack Dempsey in 1927 was paid close to one million dollars cash worth millions more than today. He then married a wealthy steel heiress Polly Lauder also worth millions, so who can blame Tunney with all that money and security, with his health intact, to retire from the risky business of having your brains scrambled in boxing ? I can't.....
Yeah burt, that makes perfect sense...it's the reason, or one of the reasons why Tunney is considered my many to have been the smartest of champions.
Jack Sharkey was a very good fighter, but Gene Tunney was better. He wins a decision, I think. Gene was a great fighter.
