that they seem to run a lot more promos of future fights and than commericals? this seems to suggest they didnt sell much ads for this. not really good when you're on a timebuy.
They are not trying to turn a profit in the first show. They are trying to build their ****y PBC brand that will rob boxing of all it's glory. You don't need to make a profit on the first show. They have a lot of money backing this thing and can sink some serious dough into it before they consider packing up.
I liked it, the casuals get to see whats next and learn something about the fighters...I like FNF but don't you get annoyed seeing the same just for men ad every round I kind of hate tacky sponsorship throw ins like this fight presented by ____ the time clock sponsored by ____ The fight ending knockout punch from ____
I'm sure they didn't expect to sell much ads. For one, its boxing making a debut on major network. Boxing right now has a reputation of it not being popular. Once a few shows get put on and they build a consistent number, we may see more ads.
Yeah but I think that was by design. It's a work in progress. The commentator were a bit dull and the people they had working the corners were truly not needed. However the fights were good and I'm looking forward to the next installment.
i am very skeptical about whether this is going to work. i dont think tonights fights are going to have any casuals looking forward to the next card, and advertisers considering paying for air time during a boxing telecast probably arent sold after tonight. I think there was more booing than cheering in tonights show. haymon has some terrible match makers, he needs to listen to the forum nerds more, in order to gauge what fights that can be made in his stable that would make for the best entertainment. i would really like for this to work so the kids watching these shows will fall in love with the sport and give us plenty of talent in 10 years, i just havent seen anything yet that i think will make a serious impact on the future of boxing.
advertisers are probably scared of boxing. I'm sure they had a sales team who worked it out but didn't really have any type of numerical proof to support they were really a draw. I'm sure tonight had atleast a million viewers so that will help them for the next go round of fights.
Thought it could be good and drive future success. Hope they keep it as unbiased as possible but that's a pipe dream.
It's already biased. Didn't you notice they didn't include the WBA belt in Thurmans intro and they didn't say AND STILL CHAMPION? They said still undefeated. Haymon is trying to make a separate boxing league in which he controls everything. This is not good for boxing.
A lot of advertisements for NBC Shows and local news, Corona and weed eaters were some of the only real advertisements. They are still building this thing, if the ratings come in big then there will be more advertisers lining up. Also it's going to take time for some companies to want to advertise since boxing has such a ****ty reputation.
? That is because Thurman's WBA belt is a "secondary WBA title." The truest form of the "regular" or "highest valued in the division" WBA title at 147 is held by Mayweather. Otherwise every fighter would have some sort of WBA, IBO, EBU, NABF, and/or WWE title attached to them.
Like everybody has mentioned, the first show wasn't meant to make a profit. What they're doing though is great. They want the new audience to learn the back story of these fighters so that they can grow to like them. If you like a player, team, or fighter, you'll tune into their fights/games more since you have an emotional investment into them. It's hard for me to watch basketball when it's two teams I don't care about. I love my boxing, but watching two fighters I know nothing about sometimes is boring. The main goal of having fights on free TV is so that these fighters gain more fans through a bigger audience. I'm sure Guerrero and Thurman did that tonight. Broner probably did as well with African American fans watching who like the flashiness
Any other broadcast would have mentioned this. Not all divisions in WBA even have a super Champion currently. I think it was worth mentioning and they did it on purpose cause Al Haymon doesn't want alphabet bodies in his program. He just wants to create a PBC "league" where there is one Champion per division. This would let him play sanctioning body/promoter/manager/ etc. He would be like Dana white.
I'll fix that. That statement should read: "The main goal of having the fights on free TV is to gain new fans for boxing, specifically the PBC Brand of boxing. This will allow Haymon's latest Brand to gain many followers. Once he has enough followers, it will appear to many that PBC is the only legit place to watch boxing. (Kinda like how casual MMA fans feel about UFC). Then he can pay the fighters almost no money and they won't have anywhere else to go. Just like the UFC. And yes, I know hes paying them a lot now. But he's just trying to get guys on board. Once they set sail is when their purses will drop.
