Will you be prepared to concede Browne any respect if he beats Chagaev? Or will you claim before the fight that if Browne wins it only proves Chagaev is shot? Thereby not having to concede Browne any respect regardless of the outcome??

So regardless of how Browne might win over Chaegev you will give him no respect for it?

If Browne were to KO Chagaev early for instance, you would just put it down to Chaegev being shot. No respect for Browne regardless of the result. Just as I thought :yep

So if Browne does happen to knock out Chagaev you will see it as a praiseworthy performance then?

As I said in post #30 of this thread :

But if Browne wins in convincing fashion - particularly by KO - I will give him the credit he deserves. Clearly you won't though, no matter how convincing Browne might be in winning the fight.

    Chagaev-Browne Update

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

Matt Clark who is the manager of WBA #4 heavyweight Lucas” Big Daddy” Browne, talks to Fightnews about the Ruslan Chagaev vs. Browne WBA title bout that should happen in May after the WBA ordered the fight will be Chagaev’s mandatory defense. The promoters of both boxers have 30 days to negotiate the fight if they cannot reach a decision it will go to a purse bid. Here’s the latest details from Browne’s manage Matt Clark.

RAY: Congratulations on WBA #4 Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne being named as mandatory contender to WBA champion Ruslan Chagaev You are the manager of Browne and Ricky Hatton is the promoter. Where and when do you think the Browne vs. Chagaev WBA title bout will happen? Would you prefer the location to be Australia, England, Russia or Germany? Your thoughts.

MATT: Thanks Ray. It’s been an incredible journey that has seen Lucas go from Australian champion to world title challenger in bang on three years. Credit must go to Lucas for realising his potential and Hatton Promotions who believed in him. Currently the promoters of both Ruslan Chagaev and Lucas Browne are in discussions about the fight. If an agreement can’t be reached within the 30 day time frame given by the WBA, then the fight will go to purse bids. My personal preference is for the fight to be in Australia, as obviously that would mean we have the advantage of being the “home” fighter. I think having the bout in Australia would cause an incredible amount of interest as there hasn’t been a Heavyweight title fight here since Jack Johnson and Tommy Burns in 1908. I have spoken to Ricky Hatton about this and it’s something that appeals to him.

RAY: It has been reported Chagaev has suffered with Hepatitis B. Will this stop the fight being held in England or Australia?

MATT: I’ve done a bit of research about on this and from what I can see Chagaev has been deemed non-infectious by medical authorities. The controversy with the Hepatitus came up about 6 years ago. Since then he’s boxed ten times against the likes of Wladimir Klitschko, Kali Meehan, and Alexander Povetkin and in both Germany and Russia. I can only assume this means he’s got a clean bill of health. We will take every precaution necessary for Lucas.

RAY: Chagaev is 37 years and Browne is 36 years. The WBA champion was a world amateur champion with 82-3 amateur record and 33-2-1, 20 KO’s record as a professional with over 20 years experience in the ring. Browne started boxing in 2009 and has a 22-0, 19 KO’s record. Will the ring experience of Chagaev be a problem for Browne?

MATT: Chagaev is definitely a crafty fighter with loads of experience. Lucas is a fast and willing learner. The legendary Jeff Fenech, Lucas’s trainer, will devise a game plan to try and nullify Chagaev’s strengths. Ruslan is certainly open to the right hand and that is Browne’s best shot. The fact is, most guys that Lucas fights have more experience than he does. It hasn’t been an issue so far and he learns with each and every fight. He’s faced two fighters that are southpaws, Col Wilson and Chauncy Welliver. Chauncy is a switch hitter but boxes in a southpaw stance for most of his bouts and he fought Lucas exclusively as a southpaw. We chose Welliver for this very reason – to give Lucas more experience against a lefty.

RAY: Browne and Chagaev have one common opponent. Travis Walker who extended Chagaev in 2010 losing a close decision with one judge only having one point the difference in the scoring where Browne totally dominated Walker in 2013 having him on the canvas four times before the American retired in the corner at end of round seven. Is this a good gauge in your opinion?

MATT: I’m good friends with Travis and set up his three bouts in Australia and traveled with him to London for the Prizefighter tournament. I watched his fight with Chagaev with plenty of interest and I thought he won the fight. I don’t always think that A + B = C, but you can argue that it shows Lucas is going to be more than competitive with Chagaev. It will give Lucas plenty of confidence knowing that Chagaev went life and death with Walker.

RAY: Chagaev won the WBA title in 2014 winning a disputed decision over Fres Oquendo. It was reported Oquendo arrived only a few days before the fight and was probably still suffering from jet lag still made the fight close. Did you see the fight? Was it a good decision?

MATT: I believe Oquendo arrived at the day of the weigh in! I have seen the fight and I’ll watch it plenty more in the lead up to Lucas’s fight. I think the decision was correct, with Chagaev just edging it, but there wasn’t much in it at all. If Oquendo wasn’t suffering from jet lag, you could say there’s every chance he would have won the fight.

RAY: If the Browne vs. Chagaev WBA title bout is held in Russia how many days before the fight will you ask promoter to have Team Browne on “Fight Location.”

MATT: Ricky Hatton is fantastic with bringing Lucas over early for all his fights abroad. Ricky has been there and done that, and he understands more than anyone the problems with jet lag and how it can effect your performance. If the fight is to be contested in Russia, then we will look to arrive at least 10 days before hand.

RAY: Browne has a bigger following in England then he has in Australia. Will that give preference to the fight being held in England other then Australia? Would Aussie fight fans support Lucas Browne in a WBA world title bout being held “Down Under?”

MATT: Lucas has tremendous support in England because he’s fought there a number of times recently and boxing is held in such a high regard over there. He’s one of the few Australian boxers that continuously wins away from home, something that is often overlooked. More than a quarter of his professional bouts have been overseas and he has no problem traveling. His profile is growing in Australia all the time and Hatton Promotions understand just how big of an event a Heavyweight title fight in Australia would be. I have absolutely no doubt what-so-ever that the bout would be supported by the Australian public. Let’s face it, having any world title fight here in Australia is almost a rarity these days. Having a Heavyweight title fight is something that happens once every three or four generations! For that reason alone, I can confirm that there is genuine interest in bringing this fight to Australia.

RAY: What would you like to say to Fightnews readers about Lucas Browne challenging the WBA champion Ruslan Chagaev? Are you confident Browne will be successful?

MATT: Firstly I’d like to say thanks for the support. To paraphrase the greatest ever football manager, Jock Stein, “Boxing without fans is nothing.” What you see with Lucas Browne, is what you get. He’s already created Australian boxing history by being the first Aussie in 122 years to win the Commonwealth Heavyweight title, a belt with a rich tradition. He’s now looking to go one further and capture the world title. We are absolutely convinced he will be successful. Chagaev is someone that we have had our eyes on for some time. This hasn’t come as a surprise to us, we’ve been working on this for quite some time. We’ve identified things we believe Lucas can exploit. This is Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne’s time. He’s been striving towards this goal for a good few years now. Lucas Browne is going to go one step further than the likes of Bill Squires, Alex Leapai, Kali Meehan and Bill Lang in the past. Australian boxers who contested the title but came up short. Australia is about to have its first Heavyweight champion.

Depends on how much Chagaev has declined.

Chauncy Welliver has been in the ring with both Chagaev and Browne, and predicts Browne will win every round.

I really am not sure who wins this. Browne might be 22-0 but his best opponent was ranked 57 pre fight so no real claim he should be fighting for a world title. Chagaev is well pest his best though.

Sometimes history has a way of repeating itself:think

Fight may be in the mold of Quarry versus Foster. There's just something about Chagaev that reminds me of Quarry, probably his physical stature and rock solid jaw.:bbb

That 30 days the WBA Championships Committee gave Ruslan Chagaev and Lucas Browne to get a deal cut must be close enough to up. Haven't heard anything. So I guess it is heading to a purse bid?

WBA has three of four titles each division; what a joke.
    Super, regular, interim, international.

Wlad is the champ, not Chagaev.
