That was his defence, and I assume that we're looking here at Roy vs Kov, with Roy being prime. Roy at 25, was extremely hard to hit. Therefore, his defence was great. But it was unconventional, because like you've alluded to, it was based on reflexes and athleticism more than fundamentals.

Roy had no defense, but also had a glass chin. And wasn't knocked out until he dropped from HW after 50 fights..

    Something has to give.

It's all to do with styles.

Montell Griffin was a short, defensive counter puncher who was trained by Eddie Futch, and Roy underestimated him. But you saw what happened towards the later rounds, and in the rematch. IMO, Kov would have beaten Montell, but Roy would have had an easier time catching Kov. There's many examples to give regarding styles. It reminds me of threads regarding Wlad vs Ali. Guys like Frazier and Jones, would always have caused Ali more problems than the super heavies IMO, even though those big guys may have crushed guys like Jones. Styles make fights.

Lou Del Valle didn't hurt Roy, he just caught him with a good shot, and Roy went down on a slippy surface. But that was from a southpaw left hand, and he'd sparred Roy many times. Kov would never have landed that specific shot, but I get your point. But look at Kov's knockdown, and then factor in that Roy had supreme speed, and used lead shots, unorthodox angles, and he knocked out two 180 plus pound fighters with single shots. There's many things to consider here. I'd have fancied Roy to have targeted Kov's body. But I think too many people here are focusing on Roy's defeats. But if you look at Roy from the mid 90's, he'd have to be favoured in this match up.

You don't think Jones would have much more respect for Kovalev's power than he did Del Valle and Griffin???

At times I felt he had no respect for Griffin's power at all, and walked through punches. He also got up of the canvas and dominated Del Valle, and I don't think he was that hurt, probably a bit shocked though.

Roy is smart, he would know Kov had serious power, and would have fought a very catious fight.

Bailey will always be ESB's King.

    Nobody compares.

He's been making people self pawn since December, 2009.

Everyone's focused on old Roy not Prime Roy and what's the matter with no one focusing on Kovalevs comp? His best wins are Cleverly and a 50 yr old BHOP. Half these guys also think Kovalev deserves to be top 5 P4P if he beats Pascal who hasn't beat anyone in the top 15 since Dawson what 4 years ago. Fanboys at their finest...

Precisely. Del Valle had a prime Jones down, and when he got up he was on unsteady legs. Kovalev lands just one shot like that and its game over.

Yeah, Kov's looking great at the moment, and people will always look at his power and then look at Roy's knockouts defeats. It's the same with threads looking at GGG vs Roy. But there's many factors to consider. I'm big fans of both Kov and GGG, but Roy in the 90's was something else. Those two fighters are great, but they've still got a lot of questions surrounding them as far as I'm concerned. I can't see how they would be favoured over Roy at his moment in time.

    How's it going mate?

Look at the slow motion clip from overhead. Look at Roy's right foot. IIRC, they had to mop the canvas a few times in the fight.

It was a good shot, but the clip isn't really necessary, because everyone knows that if Kov had fought Roy and he'd have landed flush with leverage, it would have been over. But I don't think he'd have been successful. I think Roy would have been too fast for him, and he'd have made him cautious. That's my honest opinion.

Here's Kov, leaving himself open against Caparello:

    http://youtu.be/__v6_dbY-XI

He clearly wasn't hurt in any way, but Roy without doubt could have landed on him clean.

If that had've happened, nobody knows how Kov would have reacted. It may have made him angry and he may have walked Roy down and fought him hard. Likewise, he could have gone into a defensive shell and fought cautiously. We just don't know. But what we do know, is that Roy had more variation in his shots, and he had superior speed.

Jones blows out Kovalev with ease... and for the new casual fans on the forum... RJJ is one of the best boxers of all time. Fighter of the decade, fighter of the year, P4P #1 for years, etc.... and you actually vote SK to best Jones... SK best win is against a FIFTY YEAR old fighter... really.....?

    Sk wouldn't beat Ward today...

    Foxy 01,

I'm good mate thanks, but I'm sorry to hear about your bad news.

    I respect your opinion.

I wish we could have seen the fight.

I think Roy's game plan would have been to gain his respect early, whilst obviously staying out of harms way. I think he could have pulled it off, but if he'd have been caught, it would have been lights out.

Regarding Hopkins, a lot of people on here criticised Kov for not stopping him. But I agree with you. It was clear to me that up until the final round, he never tried to get him out of there. In my opinion, Kov went into the fight trying to prove to people that he was a good boxer and not just a knockout artist. I think if he'd have stepped on the pedal earlier, things would have been different. I think up until the Hopkins fight, people underrated skills.

How do you think Joe C would have gotten on? I think I'm in a minority on here who think that Joe could have beaten him.
