It would since people have viewed Cotto as willing to fight anyone win or lose.

Yup and not MWs, makes no sense for him to have that belt if he's not fighting a MW or fighting at that weight.

I could not agree more with the original poster. Who else could Golovkin fight in May? Cotto obviously wants nothing to do with him and the other top contenders are busy around that time.

No it doesn't work like that. Only idiots and haters would criticize him for not remaining in a weight class where he doesn't belong at this late stage in his career. The guy has a family to think about.

Indeed, also the fact it's a stay busy fight knowing he'll be fighting two more times this year against better more accomplished fighters.

That's why you have to wait and see if he defends the belt and who against instead of making premature accusations.

Then he shouldn't have fought Martinez, and the expectations would NOT be for him to fight Golovkin or other MWs.

Noone thinks Cotto should stay at 160. Rather, boxing fandom in general would be perfectly satisfied I think if he just relinquished the 160 title and went back to 154.

    No title no problem.

What other MW will he face if it's not Triple G? Who now has a fight. Won't be Canelo, who would've fought at 154 and not 160. I'm going by what I hear as possibilities for his next fight and I'm not impressed.

Exactly. It's not as if he is avoiding the top opposition. They're just not available for that date. You would think boxing fans would be happy to see Golovkin fighting as often as possible.

The expectations are already NOT for him to fight GGG. The expectation is for him to vacate and move back down to 154, which he might do.

I don't know but I'm sure there are plenty of options. I'm sure many MW's would like a shot at the title.

Actually all the top MW's are all fighting each other right now. We should be seeing Cotto-Golovkin, but that's not going to happen. Fans want to see that fight, but Cotto will not let that happen.

    1. Cotto might let that happen after his voluntary defence.

    2. I'm not sure how many fans want to see that fight. I see many fans who would rather Cotto to go back where he belongs at 154.

Most fans want to see Triple G tested, and the most likely opponent that makes sense is Cotto. He has star power, and the lineal title for which Golovkin is the mandatory challenger.

He has the star power but I don't think most boxing fans think it will be a test or a competitive fight. I see many boxing fans say Cotto is too small and would lose to most or all of the top 10 middleweights. Cotto did lose to Trout, Margarito and little guys like Pacquiao remember. He only beat one MW who was small for a MW and considered by many to be a shot fighter. I can't see GGG getting much credit for beating Cotto.
