    Kovalev was definitely a favourite.

But again, what does "better win" mean in appraising fighters in a historical sense? Overhauling odds absolutely deserves it's place in obtaining insight into a fighters greatness, but in appraising the value of a given win it is meaningless.

To put it simply, Tarver was not a better fighter that night for being favourite. It didn't alter the reality of the situation. Hopkins was still vastly - vastly - superior.

Has he slipped? Yes. Has he slipped far enough that Tarver could have turned 12-0 (or 10-2 or 11-1) into 7-5? No.

For the fun of it, where was Bernard rated P4P when Kovalev beat him? And where was Tarver ranked P4P when Hopkins beat him? I have no idea what the answer is, but I'm wondering if/how you think that factors in, not knowing for sure what the answer is in either scenario.

I'm not sure to be honest. I think before the Kovalev a few of us were ****ing around in the TBRB thread and had Hopkins top 20. P4p of course, he would have been above Kovalev at that time.

Tarver I'm not sure but you could get it on Ring Rankings.

I can't be ****d to look. Thought you may have known, but that would just be another factor to consider in any case.

I disagree with you on this one McGrain. I see what you're trying to say, but I really don't get why you're saying it. So I'm willing to concede to agree to disagree on this one, but I'd politely add that I believe if you created a poll, either here or in the classic, that the consensus view would probably see things my way (although again, I can't be ****d to do so).

Going to go dust off the camcorder in the event the main event is any good after these rather lackluster encounters in the lead up. Enjoy man!

I thin in here, Kovalev might win because of all the hysteria surrounding him, especially if you started it on fight night (presuming he wins!!).

Classic is more conservative, I think Hopkins would come out top in there.

But I don't care. If Kovalev wins tonight, he will have beaten as many top five guys as Hopkins. He has no losses, Hopkins has three, making him 9-3-1-1 at the weight. Kovalev is 26-0-1, and Kovalev kicked his ass.

Kovalev's cream is better but I'm happy it's very close between them.

Sure he is big, strong and hits hard -- but -- he fights like Frankenstein. Top 50 of all-time ???? Give us a break.
