I agree with what you have written, but I think you have credited me with a post that reads like it was written by our friend Loudon.

    Serge,

I miss them too, but it's also great that we can come on here and instantly access news sites and YouTube etc.

I agree. I think that the Tarver defeat had a huge impact on him psychology.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but Roy should never have signed to fight Johnson immediately after the Tarver defeat. I believe he did it to eradicate the loss, but he was never prepared for it both physically and mentally.

Wasn't Roy considered past his best during the Ruiz fight? I hear people say he was past his best back in 99-00.

For him to be able to win a title in a weight class he had no business fighting in, and beat a MUCH bigger man while being past his prime is very impressive, even if it was against a paper titlist in Ruiz.

    :huh

Not when the opponent is John Ruiz and Jay Nady is the referee

He literally took away Ruiz ONLY 'weapon' the Jab & Grab and it was the ONLY Ruiz fight that was officiated in such a manor. It was a sparring session for Roy. A win over DM would have been much more impressive. Ruiz had ZERO ability or skills :rofl:patsch

Would you give Roy more credit if Ruiz had been allowed to jab and grab?

Why? That wasn't my point. Ruiz being allowed to disgracefully cheat wouldn't help him win that fight anyway. The guy was a slow, flat footed skill less slug with no power or anything else to bother Roy and it is why Roy fought him. Ruiz literally does not have one postive attribute as a fighter (speed, Power, Ring IQ, foot movement, etc) :rofl

    Foxy,

    Sorry for the late reply.

I purposely haven't replied to your previous post, as we discussed everything in it yesterday on the other thread.

It would definitely have been a big money fight. Despite being past his best, Evander was still immensely popular, and Roy was coming off of a great win against Ruiz which was a PPV success. The fight would have happened if Murad Muhammad and Don King hadn't been as greedy. Evander ended up fighting Toney for less money, and no title shot because he was pi$$ed with King. Of course Roy also wanted to be paid a huge amount of money, but if you read the excerpts, Murad and King wanted a bigger share than Evander. They cost Roy a big fight, although he has to take responsibility for bringing Murad on board.

The reports at the time was that the fight was a go, but then Roy went back and wanted a lot more money.

He wasn't a last resort, but Roy was looking to cash out on a huge money fight as he was almost 35. We know that Tarver had been on his mind all throughout the year, because he crashed the Ruiz press conference.

Things between his father had been bubbling under the surface for a while. But the final straw was when big Roy shot a dog that Roy was looking after for a friend. It had bitten Roy's sister, and then big Roy blasted it, no questions asked.

The weight loss couldn't have helped, but like you and everyone else knows, he was a reflex based fighter. Maybe he wouldn't have lasted much longer at the top level even without the weight loss? But according to Mackie, it can effect the immune system.

How can someone that dropped Holyfield and had him in more trouble than Lennox Lewis did, not have anything to bother a former JMW glass jawed fraud?:huh

He had to have had something.

Do you think a domestic or euro level HW would have had three close encounters with Evander in the early 00's?

Evander was past his best, but he wasn't completely shot.
