Is the world coming to an end? Is a flyweight fight co-headlining a major fight?

I don't think it will be competitive my bro. Might be a fun while it lasts type fight, but it won't be competitive I don't reckon.

Don't get me wrong - I strongly favor González (especially considering their h2h performances against common opponent Akira Yaegashi, with González beating him up and stopping him and the solid but aging Sosa losing a close but clear decision) but this is a huge step back up in class from not only Chocolatito's ridiculous tuneup last month (obliterating poor hopeless 38-28-3 Valentín León at super fly) but even from his last WBC 112lb title defense, over Rocky Fuentes.

...and I say that with all due respect to Fuentes, who's a strong contender - but Sosa is a damn ageless wonder. He's 35, which is ancient for the fly range, but he could probably whip just about everyone in the division right now outside the belt holders and maybe a couple others. (and even with any of them he would be a tough, grueling night's work)

:yep Ah, I was just in the middle of addressing that:

I'd be shocked if Chocolatito were upset here, but Sosa is a likelier (or no unlikelier) man to pull it off than, well, anyone besides Inoue.

The point is, González is making his big-league debut, co-headlining on HBO - and the opponent is a LEGIT top contender in the division who isn't going to come to lose! This is best case scenario, everything we could have ever hoped for on González's behalf in the mainstream boxing public's first real glimpse of him.

Stylistically, yeah, Sosa will probably end up getting ultimately battered and will make González look godly - but the fact that Sosa is a serious tough and credentialed SOB will just make that feat look all the more impressive.

Yes. Wonderful fight for Gonzalez to hit the big time with, because he should weave a very painful spell here. Gonzalez never looks, even momentarily like letting himself down.

I just worry about this card, if there are too many naysayers giving off the impression that Golovkin & González aren't deserving of loads of credit for dominating Monroe & Sosa respectively (which I expect they'll do, and for which they indeed will deserve loads of credit) for the completely opposite and in both cases faulty reasoning of the former being 'too green' and the latter 'too long of tooth'. :think

This could be a way for both to finally become absolute stars after years of paying dues to get there...but if casuals hear too much of this mitigating "hold your horses...Monroe is a rookie and has never fought anybody, Sosa is shot and has been through so many wars" hokum it could backfire and the impression could just be that another pair of guys from obscure corners of the globe are receiving hype for padding up their records against soft touches - resulting in an indifferent "nothing to see here" attitude possibly affecting either man's chances of returning to such a big stage with this chance ending with a whimper instead of a bang no matter the work they put in. :-(

Most casuals have no idea who Gonzalez is and if he gets exposed to 1 Million new viewers because of GGG being a ratings draw, that's a great thing. And they don't know enough to be let down by his level of comp, because I bet none of them have even seen a Flyweight match, so they'll be impressed regardless.

A few Hardcore fans might be annoyed but oh well.

Yeah but casuals who DKSAB generally listen to or seek out to bend the ear of whomever they know that is a boxing fan to give them an impression of what's going and provide them with context.

If they're listening to haters saying "Oh this fraud Golovkin is still getting pushed down our throats by HBO knocking over tomato cans and passing them off as meaningful title defenses" or "González is picking on a grandpa, he's milking his belt just like Golovkin and ducking rematches with Rodriguez/Estrada, blah-blah..." then no matter the impression the fights leave it will be tempered by that negativity.

...and there are lots of haters out there. :err

Fly is packed right now with HBO level fights for Gonzalez. First, a rematch with Estrada. Then Ruenroeng who's on the war path. Then he can take on past p4p fighters Viloria and Segura. If he fights all of those guys and Sosa on HBO, he'll be a boxing star in the US. I can see him getting those multi-million dollar pay days like Pac and May started getting circa 2007 and being the next big thing. Maybe, play up his march to 50-0 which he should hit in about two years and the promotion writes itself.

IMO fly is actually starting to trickle off the boil just a little bit now, unnoticed. I don't think it's as strong as it was and Inoue has just bombed past it by the looks.
