he should of fought margo cotto prime mosley williams instead we got ortiz, baldy, gurrero, maidana ROFL
Margo-even arum said it would have happened but Arum did not want to give Floyd Oscar Cotto-fight was never on the table even Cotto admitted this Mosley-had a dentist appointment Williams-fight was never even feasible or meaningful...
fact is margo was the killer at that time he was seen as a much tougher fight than baldy but floyd took the easy route................ fact is floyd ducked the ww division when it was red hot he also retired around that time mayweather"we are not proving to the fans who is the best"
that list could of been magarito (prime)mosley cotto 140 williams pac (2009) now that would of been a list to shout about
Margo was not even a top 5 ww at the time, and Baldomir was the lineal champ. Regardless if you or whoever thought Margo was a beast, or his toughest test at the time. Choosing to fight the lineal champ instead of a relatively unknown ww not even top 5 ww who held the WBO belt, just makes sense. Does more for his legacy.
By Roberto Elmore: After Manny Pacquiao made easy work of Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito, the howls of Floyd ducked both of these fighters reemerged. Many of these claims have been opinionated and have not yet seen proof of these allegations. I did write an article stating that Mayweather side stepping Margarito was a good move. And financially it was back then. But upon my return to the article, I found facts that will support this article. Now, I know there will still be many who will contest these facts and continue with their barrage of name calling. But its not my job to control opinions; just give the facts and let the readers decide. But I want you to pay close attention to the quotes and whos saying what. After Mayweather defeated Zab Judah, he was offered 8 million to fight Antonio Margarito on August 12th 2006. Leonard Ellerbe had this to say after the Judah fight. Floyd is not 100 percent healthy, Ellerbe said. He has a bruised right hand. His hand is not broken. Its bruised, but its a bad bruise. He wants to go into any fight 100 percent healthy. If Antonio Margarito happens to be the best available option when he is healthy, so be it. We are not turning down Margarito. I want to make that crystal clear. When and if he is the best available option for Floyds next fight, thats the direction he will move in. If you noticed, that was Ellerbe speaking. Not Floyd. Lets move on. Bob Arum, Mayweathers promoter at the time said that Mayweather preferred to await the outcome of the May 6 Oscar De La Hoya-Ricardo Mayorga fight instead of committing to Margarito because he would prefer to fight De La Hoya. Arum stated that Mayweather would have fought Margarito for the 8 million, but he wanted a guaranteed 10 million to fight Miguel Cotto and Ricky Hatton. Arum only guaranteed him 7 million. And for those who dont know Cotto and Hatton were at the Mayweather-Gatti fight and Cotto was ranked number 5 by the ring at the time (Proof: Listen to the commentary Jim Lampley at the end of round 5) . Cotto had just moved up to the 140 pound weight class and he didnt make an offer to fight Mayweather after the Gatti fight. Arum said Mayweather also asked for $20 million to fight De La Hoya, a fight Arum said he wasnt interested in participating in. Thats not in the cards, Arum said. He wants $20 million for the De La Hoya fight? Its not there. Sometimes, my man, you gotta know when to hold em and when to fold em. Well talk about things down the road. Notice this part Arum was talking. source-www.boxingnews24.com Floyd Mayweather Jr
Margarito was a top 3 ww at the time actually and far from unknown in 2005 he was actually the #1 contender to Zb's lineal title but Baldo took the title
Really Floyd was just going up to welterweight to take on at the time the undisputed WW champion in judah. Obviously judah was upsetted by baldomir, so after Floyd disposed of judah he had the option of either fighting margarito for 8 million dollars or fighting the universally recognized lineal WW champion in Baldomir for 8 million dollars. I don't see how any boxer would choose margarito in that case, it makes absolutely no sense and baldomir was no stepping stone at the time either, he was a dangerous guy who hadn't lost in about 7 or 8 years. After that fight, Floyd once again had several options and chose to move up to JMW to make the biggest fight in boxing at the time with the biggest payday for himself. No one can knock him for doing that. Than, once again he had several options after the DLH fight and decided to take on the lineal JWW champ in hatton, a guy who had been campaigning at WW for about 3 or 4 fights. Once again, no one can knock him for taking that fight considering how big of a draw hatton had become especially post-Kostya fight and the fact he was a dangerous, undefeated fighter at the time. I'm sorry but if the choice is to take on a no name guy like Paul Williams or go after a DLH or Hatton, how can anyone blame him for taking on the more established fighters with the MUCH larger names? Does anyone honestly think he would've generated big money in a fight with P-Wil? As for margarito, his stock fell considerably after being dominated by Williams. So the timing was unfortunate but Floyd had much better options between 2006 to the end of 2007. Now you can criticize him if you want for taking semi retirements afterwards, but you cant knock him for the fighters he took on between 06-07.
A prime Mayweather would have fought on the backfoot and countered margo all night long. Fight would have been easier than some people say it would.
