Why doesn't Kovalev fight at super middleweight ?

I wonder what weight he'd come to a CW fight with? I remember Danny Green's trainer saying changing CW to 200lbs was a mistake because 25lbs between divisions was too much. I can kinda see his point with guys like Kovalev would be outsized by the bigger CWs but has to kill himself to make LHW.

 

Forget about SMW.
The big gap between LHW and Cruiser is very big and prettty damning for many LHW's.

You have to think that most of today's Cruisers are actually 215/220 kinda HW's, who boil down to 200 for the weighin. It's basically like moving up to old school Heavyweight.

I think he could do pretty well there though, but he can't go on a rampage anymore and would carefully have to pick like most do.

So he's basically a cruiserweight that's able to make LH and dominate there because he's operating at LH with CW chin and power ?

 

Kovalev fought at welterweight and middleweight before going pro. He's certainly not a cruiserweight. He could move up and fight at cruiserweight but it's simply a boring division always under the shadow of HW with no big money so it'd be quite pointless for him from every aspect.

 

you have guys like Lebedev, Kalenga, Huck, Hernandez, Drozd, Wlod, Chakhiev, Kudriashov, but the division is considered boring because they don't face eachother

 

It's boring indeed and it's not about people not fighting each other. Unless the cruiserweight limit is lifted to 210lbs, that division is doomed to be unpopular.

Yes, but all of the champions are cutting ten pounds or more in every weight division, so it evens out. Kirk made a thread with everyone's fight night weights and there wasn't anybody who didn't come into the ring one or two divisions heavier on fight night.

 

Also, Kovalev just took home 3.25 million dollars for beating Pascal. The biggest purse a cruiser has ever earned is 1.5 million. You have to go down to super bantamweight before you find another division as poorly paid. Light heavyweight is a prestige division with history that people recognize and appreciate.

 

Nice info was wondering how much kovalev was getting, bout time he got proper money in the bank. No suprise lhw's get paid more. Cruiserweight has some ferocious fighters in there that never face each other, it's like there all scared to make a move up and claim superiority. Perhaps they think once you are consensus number 1 at 200lbs, you have to make that leap to heavyweight to make the money. They aren't adventurous enough or unconfident. Hopefully usyk will be the man to shake it up. Lebedev deserves another chance to unify or atleast take 2 belts, Huck never seemed to want to do it. It pains me to say it, but atleast haye went for it and I don't like the bloke. A top cruiserweight.

No, he definitely isn't a drained cruiser. He would look absolutely bloated as a cruiser. While he looks just normal and comfortable at his actual weight. He isn't that big.
Hopkins looked as big as him, or even slightly bigger.

Against Pascal he looked heavier than against Hopkins, and still, Pascal dwarfed him.
Strangely Pascal's body isn't mentioned often, but he's one of the hulkiest around in boxing. His upper body is absolutely astonishing, as someone else said, his traps remembers heavyweight Holyfield's.

Pascal is huge, and he was bigger than Kovalev. That, to be honest, doesn't really have an impressive body. There's nothing impressive in Kovalev, not even the neck or the head. Nor the legs or the calves. Nothing.
