Of course, Martinez wasn't undefeated in a whole record stand-point, but he hadn't lost since 2009, I think. He was like 5 or so years undefeated up until he met Cotto. You're arguing semantics here.

It's funny how people thought he beat Murray whereby Martinez ADMITS he was hurting all throughout the fight. Martinez says something like he was 50% against Murray, yet Martinez said he was 100%, and still argues this, for his fight against Cotto.

    First off, almost doesn't count.
Second, even if he had been top 5... that was years ago and no fight sceduled, while the rule is within 2 years.
Last one that actually qulified was the Cunningham rematch over 3 years ago.
And Lewis clearly was the man in the division while that happened

    Jesus Christ..

Cotto moves up in weight, beats up and knocks out the lineal champion in Martinez all when people were saying he's gonna get destroyed.

A fight with Canelo was supposed to materialized on May 2nd. Cotto knew that the Pac/Mayweather fight was gonna happen that day so he waited. Canelo and Oscar copped out, saying that Cotto was scared and is now fighting Kirkland.

Now everyone is saying Cotto is scared and is undeserving? Since when has Cotto ever been afraid to get into a fight?

Bunch of haters in this site.

You are and probably know you are leaving out a couple of details that puts everything in quite a different perspective.
The common conception was that even an 80% Martinez would beat the cráp out of poor Cotto, but it turned out Martinez could hardly move and it probably means that his knee injury is a career ender. Also, everyone wanted Martinez to face the division's best, but were happy for him to get a payday out of his long underpaid career.

So Cotto now is champ and then clearly has no intention to defend it against an actual MW, let alone someone from the top5. Canelo wants to fight him and and gives him 2 deadlines wich he doesn't respond in time to. Canelo is fed up and moves on.
Then we get Cotto's "shortlist" (wich might or might not be accurate) wich contains only 147 and 154 fighters. And he made pretty clear that he doesn't want to fight Golovkin.

Cotto always was one of the true warriors, until he got PPV status and became a diva.

Please, there's no details that I left out. Those are the cold hard facts, everything else is just speculation. Martinez tried to cherrypick a shot, washed up Cotto who lost to Trout and got knocked out, plain and simple. Now people are mad because that wasn't supposed to happen and they're still butthurt about it.

Canelo gave Cotto a deadline BEFORE the Mayweather/Pacquaio fight was announced. He demanded 2 deadline's then copped out to fight Kirkland while Cotto was waiting for the announcement. After it was announced, Canelo changed his May 2nd date because he(like Cotto) knew that he couldn't compete with the biggest fight of the decade.

I honestly believe people just hate Cotto because he won the lineal title instead of just a paper belt. If he would of won the WBO strap, nobody would be complaining.

He wasn't cherrypicking (well, in a way he was) but going for his biggest career payday knowing very well he couldn't perform and just hope for the best. Don't change this in Cotto being so good, or Martinez being that bad.
Of course BEFORE that fight was announced, because nobody knew if or when it was going to happen while the date was getting closer and closer.
Canelo needed a big name to hold on to the Mexican date and Cotto was that name. Wich in the end didn't matter anymore because the big fight got announced.
Cotto himself was just hoping to cash out on his Middleweight belt, luring Floyd in if the big fight would fall trough.
They would complain too, but less.
Of course it is because of the championship. History!
Everyone knows who the man is at Middleweight and surprise, surprise, it isn't Cotto. But because Cotto isn't planning to defend the belt against the actual guys he should defend it against, history will be fooled.
Hardly anybody in 30 years time knows the real circumstances anymore and the champion on paper would be Cotto. While the big man is left in the cold. Financially and on legacy.

I don't hate Cotto, and probably never will. He has been one of my favorites for many years now.
But he lost a lot of my respect with his diva antics lately. Pulling a Floyd in more as one way.
