Why doesn't Kovalev fight at super middleweight ?

I doubt he could make 168 and perform properly down at that weight.

 

The only recorded ring weight we have for Andre Ward is the 176 he weighed for Dawson. Virgil Hunter said Ward walks around at about 179, although Ward refused to reveal his walk around weight in one interview I read. I've definitely seen him look heavier than that in the past. Ward said he could probably make 160 but he wouldn't be any good at that weight.

Chad Dawson weighed 191 for the Glen Johnson rematch, a still very lean 191, and went down to 168 for the Ward fight. That's 23 lbs. He was a corpse by the time he climbed into the ring.

Golovkin (and his trainer) say that he could make 154 given enough notice.

Carl Froch weighed 170 for Abraham and doesn't put on much weight after the weigh in.

KEEP YOUR WEIGHT ON POINT

I walk around close to my fighting weight because my body-fat count is naturally low. I'm very skinny out of camp. So where would I lose that weight, where would it go from? I'd have to start losing some skeletal muscle, I'd have to cannibalise and do long runs with no energy. My bodyfat count is about three per cent, two per cent on fight week, I'm ripped to shreds. For me to then get down another 8lbs, I'd have to become skinny and lose my back or get skinnier legs. I wouldn't be the same fighter.

Scientifically it's impossible to rehydrate any sooner than 72 hours after dehydrating but you've got 30-33 hours depending on when you fight. If you take off 4-5lbs of fluid before the weigh-in, you can't expect to be rehydrated and ready to fight the following day. So when I see them in the ring looking like they've put 14lbs on from the weigh-in it brings a big smile on my face and I think, You've put all that weight on overnight, which tells me you took a load of weight off before the weigh-in, which also tells me you're absolutely exhausted and drained.

For the last three or four weeks before the Lucian Bute fight, I weighed just under 168lbs, straight after I trained and it means my body is used to working at that weight. I was 171lbs or 172lbs when I fought Bute. It's a massive advantage, huge.'

 

Ward is first in line though. lol

“By 32 years old, Andre Ward will be heavyweight champion of the world,” says the confident trainer. “He has always beaten guys bigger than him, even in the amateurs. If Andre gets to 200 pounds naturally and maybe grows an inch taller, he could become heavyweight champion absolutely.”

You know, I listen to people talk about his punching power, but I think that he can hit just as hard as anybody out there, and they (the critics) don’t know that. Now that he is a champ, and you include that extra twenty five to thirty percent of confidence, I am going to start calling for the knockout. You see, I never used to call for it before. But believe me he could knock out anybody out there. And he could hit as hard as anybody out there. But the critics don’t believe that. They will believe that when it starts happening.

'But in the meantime Ward has decided to do some wide-open preaching with his mouth, claiming in an interview with ESNews that heavyweight twin-peaks Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko are possible future targets for the current 168-pound world champion.

“I want to [challenge for a world heavyweight title], I’ve talked about that since I’ve been a kid,” Ward said, apparently straight-faced. “It seems crazy right now, but I’m not gonna be [one-hundred and] sixty-eight [pounds] forever.”

“You got to fight the right heavyweight,” he admitted, but added: “As a fighter, I believe I could beat a Klitschko… I’m wired to believe that…I think it could happen, absolutely.”
