In boxing, the most dominant nation per capita by far is cuba....this is a relatively small island nation of about 11 million people...and just a handful of fighters active on the professional scene... STILL they are way overrepresented across the spectrum from the lower to upper weight classes. It's an incredible feat that started with kid gavilan and continued with napoles and casamayor...these days, it seems like every cuban boxer you see on TV is a either a champ or a rising star.

cubans, like ee fighters tend to have very long amateur careers...as a result, when they eventually turn pro they are generally far more advanced than the average american fighter...unlike ee fighters, cubans tend to be very athletic...they have a blend of speed and mobility combined with explosive power that makes them very tough.

The thing with cuban fighters is their relatively tiny fanbase. The small number of cubans in america translates into very little support for some of the most talented fighters ever seen...as a result, they get less recogniation than far inferior fighters, suffer a lot of bad decisions, and top fighters regularly avoid them with no consquences...and their talent is more likely to be played down than overplayed. so, fyi here are some cuban stars y'all might have missed out on.

Rigo= the crown jewel of boxing technique and the pfp #2 fighter...and he's only getting better. Shamelessly ducked by every fighter from jfw to sfw. The excuse usually given is, he's "boring" ....this is just another way of saying he generally dominates every second of every round to the point where the fight loses it's drama. A shoo-in for the IBHOF....now, if the big fights would start coming...

Lara= after ridiculously dominant performances against williams, smith, trout and vanes, an off-the-deck, dramatic ko of big-punching angulo in a fight of the year candidate and clearly outclassing canelo alvarez another pfp entrant, few other fighters in boxing can boast a better resume. he's suffered more bad decisions than practically any fighter in history, but clearly belongs in the top 5 pfp...lately he has improved to the point where he seems practically unbeatable except by fmj-like talent...a potential matchup with ggg, cotto and possibly andrade would give him the cross-over s****om he deserves.

Hernandez= the best cruiserweight in the world and the current champ is unknown by anybody in the united states. Hopefully he gets profile-raising fights with huck and maybe kovalev in the future....hernandez is another overlooked star who struggles with shady officiating.

mike perez= this heavyweight star seemed about to make the big jump up in class when he ended the career and nearly the life of a russian fighter in a fight that left the russian permanently disabled...a deeply religious man, he still doesn't seem to have fully recovered from that situation, but has the talent to reach the top.

luis ortiz= known as the king kong of cuba....6 foot 4 was dq'd for testing positive for nandralone...assuming he gets through his situation with commission's investigation, inquest etc, he should be back ...tremendous talent and power. a future dominant force at hw.

yuriorkis gamboa= once the star of the current crop of cuban fighters, gamboa has showed signs of slipping lately...inactive and unfocused, he hasn't looked that impressive. he was ko'd by lw champ crawford last year. gamboa has all the natural talent in the world. if he can redediicate himself and get down to sfw, he can easily be a star again.

peter quillen= ok so, he's american born with a short amateur career of only 15 fights. But this cuban-descent fighter has tremendous power and athleticism that makes him one of the top mw and a favorite to regain the mw title from andy lee, potentally setting up a huge fight with ggg.

With 17 divisions and 4 major belts per div(total of 68 possibilities) there are like 3 Cuban "champs".

    That's some domination.

For a country less than the size of many US states, it's a pretty impressive number also considering the fact that only defectors can go pro which is a tiny portion of the Cuban boxing community.

That per capita thing is stupid. Who cares about population size?

Should we also give America props because the biggest sports are baseball, NFL, basketball, and not boxing? It's just a dumb statistic that really doesn't prove anything.

If only they could just be aallowed go pro when and where they wished.

But nope, not only is communism the most murderous, economy destroying ideology in history, it also fcks up boxing fans enjoyment.

communism iis truly a bleak, insidious and soul-shattering social system...and we can see the effects of it right here in this forum in the borderline comments from the g g g e t a r d s and the kkkovalites.

What about Willie Monroe Jr OP?

    Cubans do more than okay.

Hernandez has a claim to cruiser champ
    Lara is the 154 champ
Abril is arguably the best 135 champ
    Rigo is the 122 champ

Gamboa could maybe dominate at 130 given the opportunity.

Mike Perez is rubbish though and Quillin not much better.

You tell ME what about willie monroe....never even HEARD of that dude until last weekend.

you might be right about abril, but i haven't seen him since the rios robbery....looks like he fights only once a year now. another drawback of being a top class fighter and not having a big fanbase is inactivity.

imagine if cuban boxers going back to stevenson, savon etc were allowed to fight pro....half the fighters on the atg list would probably come from cuba alone...the rest would be from america:lol:

just look at the olympics. cuban boxers from that tiny island constantly outperform ALL of russia and ee which is like a region of hundreds and hundreds of millions of people.

:dealWhile it's not great either the idea is at least nice, Capitalism on the other hand it literally lives on bodies to feed its war machine and countless military, medical and prison industrial complexes.
