Boxing is underrepresented in the United States compared to other sports. Let's also give them props for that. The per-capita thing is stupid. It's the same thing. One can also argue that the United States also has a small talent pool because of the numerous sports, jobs, etc. compared to Cuba.

As I said, just a stupid, meaningless statistic.

Cuba produces great fighters but at the same time the nation isn't remotely "dominant" in the pros if we are comparing nationalities of top fighters.

It's true that probably about 10-20% of Cubans are interested in taking boxing while only about 2-3% of Americans are but there is no fairer way to do it. The fact remains that there are over 300 millions Americans with the opportunity to participate in boxing against only 40 million or so Cubans.

Factoring in desire would not make any sense, how do we know the reason that boxing is underrepresented is because percentile speaking Americans are not as good at it, and so don't participate? We don't know which drives the other, all we know is the mathematical facts and so it is the only fair thing to consider.

cuba's population is about 11 million...not 30 mil. so, 3% of a america is more than the entire population of cuba....

but i know you were only speaking hypothetically

Damn, had to look that up...I could've swore it had more people than that twenty years ago. Anyways yeah, per capita is definitely not stupid as the other guy was saying, it is a commonly accepted statistic for a reason.

Cubans didn't even dominate the last Olympics, not a single gold medal won

Cubans dominating boxing in general? Dominating at losing maybe

Every major Cuban prospect from the mass defection 5 years ago has lost, except for Rigondeux. And it's only a matter of time before he's demolished by Lomachenko.

    Agree in some points, but:
    #1*

Hardly. He's not a typical Cuban school boxer either.

He's 35. Hardly going to dominate the HW division in the future.

He is a joke. Shouldn't be ever mentioned alongside any top Cuban boxer.

Also, most of the top Cuban boxers right now are in the WSB (Savon, La Cruz, Iglesias, Alvarez, Ramirez etc).

The success of Cubans in the pro ranks is actually impressive given their whole circumstances... didn't want to sound like I was hating earlier.
