Guys didn't have diuretics back then, they had a much more difficult time losing weight. Especially over 30.
I don't think cruiserweight would've been a good division for Holmes or Ali even when they were at their most trim. I feel like Ali was in tip top shape when weighing his lowest, same goes for Holmes. plus there is no reason why they'd cut down to cruiserweight when they clearly were big enough to be heavyweights. Cruiserweight division is more for guys who's size was a big detriment to them at heavyweight. Floyd Patterson comes to mind as a guy who'd have been an excellent cruiserweight. Doug Jones is another one, perhaps Marciano had he been around in modern day with the giant heavyweights of today would've been a destroyer at cruiserweight. Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Michael Moorer or a young Jerry Quarry all come to mind as well as guys who'd be excellent cruiserweights. Joe Frazier I believe could've been unstoppable as a cruiserweight but he was pretty much unstoppable as heavyweight so there isn't really much of a reason for him to go down.
Yup, he would've been a fantastic cruiserweight... Roy Jones as well would've been very effective in his prime at cruiser
I have Holyfield at #1 and Deleon at #2. From #3 onward it gets complicated and there are probably several guys who are interchangeable for that spot.
I'm surprised no one else has mentioned James Toney yet.. I feel when he was on at cruiserweight he was real hard to beat.
He does have one of the ATG showings at the weight. I think most would agree Jirov is at least standing in the eaves of top-10 all time (and h2h maybe even a little higher) and how many times has someone of that distinction been systematically broken down and defeated as impressively? Holyfield over De Leon, and...?
Fantastic read, man! :thumbsup Really interesting. The bit with Apachinsky releasing the hounds.. atsch :scaredas: What a legend. :rofl
Thank you, finally some recognition! But seriously that a half decent journeyman and a one legged fighter could be competitive with the best the division had to offer, shows what we thought at the time, the division sucked.
I agree with you about the "so and so would been a great crusierweight". I was disappointed when, right of the bat, the posts started with that ****. If people want to debate/discuss crusiers, talk about cruisers.
