I hope he didn't I never heard that story before and to be fair the poster who said he did is an idiot
I've always heard the Duran punching a woman story was that she rushed into the ring and came running up behind him and he turned and swung immediately and only then realized it was a woman after he'd hit her. If that's the case, it's not like he intentionally hit a woman. He just reacted to someone running up behind him. Plus, in a situation like that, a woman can be just as dangerous as any man if she has a knife, and a lot of people would probably rather punch first and sort things out later if they don't know if the person is armed or not.
Stanley Ketchel apparently enjoyed hitting people I thought Jose Gonzalez tortured Renaldo Snipes and was glad when Bowe gave him a beating.
Ali had enormous willpower, heart and chin, thats what kept him up and probably contributed to his subsequent deterioration. With that being said he was a blatently anti white racist loudmouth a-hole despite his great skill.
I met Azumah nelson and he was a class guy. Quality guy. Fighting is a hard business and emotion does you no good.
Jeff Fenech STILL comes across as a thug. Could be hype but his own trainer called him the most viscous person he'd ever met.
Those attributes of his are probably highly prized and esteemed, especially by such fighters as Mike Tyson, and are invaluable to him and any fighter he's working with and has a vested interest in.
Honestly, I've watched some of his early fights and almost with every stoppage he has to be really restrained by the ref or his cornermen to stop hitting the opponent. He screams at his opponents while they are down as well ala Kovalev (vs Davila, Zarate). Nasty piece of work, an incredible boxer though.
The number he did on Zarate was almost shocking...I first just attributed it to nerves and the excitement he had when destroying a great fighter of Zarate's magnitude. I think however, he went against the grain..."over the top" so to speak with hitting Carlos when he was down, and I wondered if a dq was coming, but the atmosphere was electric for that bout... He was magnificent alright, but always seemed to me a sadistic sort of guy.
Didn't Johnson have to follow Burns all the way around the world trying to get a title fight from him? Some of the people he beat down deserved it in my opinion. I know they were from a different era and all but the guy definitely took a lot of **** throughout his life and career.
Several people have mentioned Wilfredo Gomez, but at times, he was not sadistic at all, even the exact opposite of it sometimes. His fight against Eddie Ndukwu is a perfect example of what I'm saying. The first knockdown of Ndukwu is extremely awkward, as Ndukwu almost flips backward over the top rope which could have been extremely dangerous. Gomez makes a quick grab for Ndukwu's legs to prevent him from falling out of the ring and getting seriously injured. When the second and final knockdown comes a short time later, Gomez hits Ndukwu and Ndukwu staggers a few steps with his hands down. Gomez steps forward and could have easily landed a punch on the defenseless Ndukwu before he fell, possibly two punches, but holds back. The ref immediately stops the fight without counting because Ndukwu obviously couldn't continue and Gomez comes right over to check on Ndukwu and see if he's ok. Maybe he'd mellowed out a bit by then, or maybe he had some personal grudges with the fighters he was more sadistic with, or maybe he liked Ndukwu a lot. Whatever the case, he really seemed to be concerned about Ndukwu.
