That part was a joke. ;) (a nod to Zabdiel's constantly shifting mystical allegiances...plus the fact that Bernard Hopkins, a NOI member, is grouped with Amir Khan, a Punjab Sufi :patsch)

...but I have in fact seen Golovkin erroneously placed on lists of Muslim boxers. :!:

(they probably just assumed he is because odds are, if you are Kazakh, you're Muslim - and the kicker is that Golovkin isn't even Kazakh, at least in terms of his original nationality or his bloodline)

Never in his life has GGG ever been a Muslim, or even lived amongst them.

I've seen this guy drop his hands and pull straight back on SEVERAL occasions. It's almost like he practices this "tactic" during sparring. In his last fight, Martin Murray was touching Golovkin with 3s and 4s. I'm sorry but Golovkin is just TOO defensively irresponsible to be considered a "boxer" in my book. Plus, there's still the open question concerning whether or not this guy can fight off of the back foot...

You could probably count on your hands the # of times Golovkin has been caught with a full on flush power shot in championship fights, and have fingers left over.

I can think of a few off the bat - the shot Geale landed simultaneous to (or actually one split-second before) getting KTFO, a couple that Stevens got in that Golovkin didn't see coming, and maybe two or three from Murray.

The reason I can remember? They stand out. Golovkin, for whatever flaws you perceive him as having, doesn't cop much damage. His face is almost never marked up after fights. Slight right eye swelling against Ouma (and that is the most punches he ever absorbed, from anybody) but that's about it.

Did he not KO Lajuan Simon off the backfoot, something MW Abraham couldn't do even after throwing the kitchen sink at him?

    Good Post enjoyed it
I think GGG could go all the way I'd like to see him take on Cotto but don't see that happening anytime soon. We'll know when one of the big boys face him

Honestly, I find this the most puzzling line of detraction. Because I cannot for the life of me, given Golovkin's style, strengths and attributes conceive why it would ever be a good idea for him to give up his physical and stylistic advantages and fight off the back foot. What comes to mind is remembering Canelo trying that, and getting cute on the ropes and just getting punched for no reason while letting Angulo not have to worry for the moment about damage coming back.

Some people build a style out of fighting off the back foot and do very well with it. The ones who do well, are playing to their strengths - both in attributes and temperament.

Its like saying Floyd should fight off the front foot, or Ward should trade shots in the pocket. Well, they both have occasionally.. and then go back to doing what they do best so as not to lose the fight.

    Exactly! :nod

For him to end up on the backfoot would be a huge red flag and indicate that something went drastically wrong (a strategic failure, cold start, momentary - and wildly uncharacteristic - lapse in concentration, etc) for Golovkin.

Fighting on the backfoot isn't some merit badge he needs to earn. It's antithetical to his most comfortable approach to the game and venturing needlessly into unfamiliar territory would be folly. The fact that nobody has forced him to consistently fight backing up (though Stevens and maybe a few brave unfortunate others have tried) is a testament to his excellence in executing his game plan and making it the GGG show no matter the efforts to hijack the stage.

Good thread, especially about the earlier fights in his career. I was actually thinking about creating a thread called "Khomitsky - underrated Golovkin win?" or something like that.

Based on her appearance, I would say she's purely Korean.

Yet you still can't name any names of fighters that GGG should be fighting.
You don't have an informed opinion, you just want something to cry about.
Maybe you should try following the MW division.

Golovkin is a "boxer-puncher." He's not a boxer because he is always coming forward, and while his defense is "decent", he doesn't think much about it, His priority is to throw lots of punches, and he will exchange if he has to.

You think he's a "boxer" because he jabs alot. As a matter of fact his jab is probably his best puch which is saying a lot.

Characterizing his style has been somewhat controversial I see, which owes to his attributes being difficult to categorize.

As far as someone saying the division is weak, it is far more stacked than when Hopkins was champ.

I believe the boxer or boxer/puncher debate finally falls trough on the point that Golovkin seems to have different mindsets going into a fight.

In his last fight -for me- it was clear that he was looking to end things with his feature punch wich I call the "Cranial Compacter"... I guess everyone knows what I am talking about.
He was using that punch to a fault, even when it didn't seem to work on Murray and when other punches seemed to be the better option and maybe would have even ended things earlier.

It tells me he wasn't just clearly looking for the knockout, but wanted to do it with his feature punch. I don't know if it was his trainer Abel Sanchez came up with that or Gennady himself, but if I was his trainer I would advise him to pick the punch that is best suited for the current situation.

All in all I would definitely label GGG as a boxer/puncher.
