Good post. Punches landed are what count, not thrown. Activity can be illusory at times - it can seem like a fighter is winning, but if they are not landing then they lose. Maidana v Floyd was a case in point.

watch the fight, dude...it was clear during the fight that loma and GRJ were executing different approaches. it was a matter of if you liked GRJ's hustle, speed and volume or if you prefrred loma's accuracy and power. a lot of the early rounds, GRJ looked to outhustle loma...in the middle rounds loma didn't even do anything for a few rounds...

the thing with the punchstat is, the judges don't have access to punchstat numbers...they're scoring the fight they see...and they saw GRJ winning between 4 and 6 rounds.

Gary Russell fought his heart out that night and would have given anyone in the world that night fits at 126 but he did indeed lose clearly. Loma was sensational that night looking like the second coming. I think years from now people will talk about Loma's win over Russell as his signature performance.

here's a report on the fight that talks about the size difference and the sheds some light on the punchstat numbers.

After getting beaten in his last fight, Ukrainian Vasly Lomachenko (2-1, 1 KO’s) was able to come back against the smaller but much quicker Gary Russell Jr (24-1, 14 KO’s) to beat him by a 12 round majority decision and capture the vacant WBO featherweight title. Lomachenko had Russell Jr hurt in the last 20 seconds of the 12th round after tagging him with some really big punches to the head and body.

The final judges’ scores were 114-114, 116-112, and 116-112.

Russell Jr threw 209 more punches than Lomachenko, and was landing more in the last 4 rounds of the fight. However, Lomachenko was connecting with the bigger shots to the head and mostly to the body. The body shots gave Russell Jr a lot of problems in the second half of the fight, as he seemed to hurt him each time he was hit hard.

Lomachenko’s size and power advantage was the key in this fight. He wasn’t fighting someone with more size than him like he was in his last fight against Orlando Salido. Lomachenko had problems with Salido’s body punching, but he didn’t have to worry about that tonight with Russell Jr mostly head-hunting in the fight.

Russell Jr was much more effective when he was backing Lomachenko up. It was light night and day. Lomachenko isn’t nearly as good in going backwards as he is going forwards.

By size difference you mean he's shorter?

I saw the fight. Volume means nothing when you aren't landing one damn punch. It was a joke how bad Russell looked in that fight. I don't care one bit about Loma but the fight wasn't even close. Russell was just there to survive and not get KOed. Maybe we will get a rematch? Who knows but this fight was not competitive at all.

explain the judges scores then....i mean the fact that they saw GRJ winning 4-6 rounds means they saw it as somewhat competitive...maybe it's you that's fulla schit.

how about all the long stretrches in the fight when loma was doing nothing and GRJ was the only one initiating the action...did GRJ lose those sequences too?
