Pulev and Povetkin were rated above the retired Vitali. But retirements mean nothing. Ali is still the WBC Champ in my book, why has nobody fought him to claim it?

Different day, different age......Can't knock Klitchko for winning in his era and dominating in the process. He did not create all the different belts, titles and organizations.

Who should Wlad have fought between 2007 and today that he didn't? I'm pretty sure he's fought nothing but top contenders undefeated fighters and mandatory matches?

I'll grant you that he's had some easy defenses but I clearly remember posters on this board hyping up the rain man Ray Austin who was going to knock WLad clean out.... "Wlad hasn't beaten anyone that size...." you can't have it both ways

People love to tell the world how Wlad will get KO'd by Haye, Povetkin, Pulev whatever then once he dispatches the challenger they were overated bums and he never beat anyone

Chagaev, Haye, and Pulev could not have been the #2 rated HW in the world at the time Wlad fought them seeing as Vitali was active..

How could that be when he hadn't avenged the Brewster loss?

not really claiming he should, but its a mark on his record that he relied on illegal tag teaming to hold onto titles when horribly outmatched ie he was never dominant.

Ask Dino and others, pretty sure there were a lot of posters saying that Haye was going to KO Wlad....and I remember the Ray Austin comments vividly

what if Wlad and Ray fought a hard 7 or 8 rounder before wlad caught him with a Left hook to KO him? would Wlad get more credit than he does for blowing him out in the 2nd round?

Ruling for a decade and not being the lineal champ are two different things. You can be the best in a division without this circumstance.

Up until his retirement, I think a solid case can be made for Vitali having been the #1 HW in the world.

basically, without vitali, wlad would have been another bitpart titlist ending his reign destroyed by a retired failure from the lewis era and with no more than half a dozen defences MAXIMUM (and probably far fewer).

and without wlad, superheavy vitali would have ended his career by the hand of a former MW.

and in the meantime the dominant HW could well have been someone like Haye, which is even more of a joke!
