Well Ali was just a better fighter. When we say that someone has trouble with something what that means, to me at least, is that they struggled against lesser fighters with that attribute. Arguello had trouble with movers; he lost to Ernesto Marcel sure but he was not Arguello yet and it's his loss to Fernandez that people bring up. Ken Norton had trouble with punchers- it's not the Foreman fight that people will bring up most often but the Shavers fight.

 

IMO The fighter who was exposed in the Ali v Young fight was Young,Ali was a fat 230lbs 34 years old complacent champ, Young was 27.
The fight was there for the taking for the challenger , but Young did not have the mentality of a champion, he did not seize his chance .
There is a reason Young has 5 split decisions on his record.
He was never willing to go the extra mile, he was never prepared to," let it all hang out "
, "take his shot", "step up to the plate ",whatever the **** anyone wants to call it.

That's why he was never the champ, because he was prepared to settle for second best.

 

No one voted for him ,and you don't win fights by sticking your upper half out through the ropes to avoid punches.
If you want the title you have to take it!

 

It's a pity that he has not been declared the winner of the Ali fight, as deserved ....
He would have been the only man to have won both Ali and Foreman ...
And his status would be considerably higher today.

 

Young deserved the deciscion IMO. I had him up by two rounds. Ali looked terrible in that fight, fat, slow, too much clowning. Young's style left much to be desired but I think Ali got the nod because well he was Ali. Ali at his best easily handles Young to be clear but I feel the judges got this fight wrong. More wrong than Norton 3.

 

He would still be perceived as a negatively boring ,safety first fighter because that's what he was.

Ali was there to be taken, and Young didn't do it. He simply didn't have the all out style that was necessary to take the title from the champ. Two years later a much more limited fighter in Spinks fought how you take the title from an aging and more ready to be taken Ali.
