What are your thoughts on this long-tenured 130-pound champion? His name is but a footnote these days, but he held the title for a long while. Of course the Tyrone Everett fight stains his legacy and he is known for having his face removed by Arguello not once but twice, but he was a tough, tough guy. Arguello himself put it best when he said "you could do anything to him and he'd still fight." Weird, herky-jerky style, looking something like a child pretending to box, with really animated, overdone hand movements while in fighting stance. A strange mix of trying to maintain a classic boxing stance while at heart being a pure brawler. Still, he got the job done.
Arguello himself put it best when he said "you could do anything to him and he'd still fight." Alexis of course twice disproved his own statement ! The Body of a tall rangy Boxer with the Mindset of an Aggressive Fighter, A difficult nights work for all bar the best I suspect, but the absolute cream would make him pay for not utilising his Physical Assets to their Maxim advantage, But he would match up well in most fantasy fights, Escalera Vs Morales anyone ?
He occupied for me, a somewhat lesser tier in that great decade known as the 70's...which was chock full of great champions, 15 round title fights, free tv, and just all around great memories, but he was an especially entertaining fighter, along with Danny Lopez,...and i enjoyed the Snake Man immensely.
There's an even better dream matchup; Escalera-Lopez at 130...... It's funny that he never even gets a mention as one of the better Puerto Rican fighters, which I think he was. Certainly not in the league of the top four or five, but in the top ten.
Tough guy. Even a faded version beat Gene Hatcher who won the junior welterweight title less than two years later. Took punches from Arguello that would have kod lesser men.
I watched the first Arguello fight again just a week or two ago. Guy absolutely had as much heart as you ever see. Unfortunate to come along at a time when Arguello was in the neighborhood.
Much like Esteban DeJesus and Rodrigo Valdez, he just was around at the wrong time and people forget how good he was due to being second best.
