You are wrong ,dead wrong. The referee warned C*ckell for a low blow! Marciano would have been dsq'd in an English ring to suggest otherwise is ridiculous. "In his dressing room after the fight, ****ell said he got a "raw deal." His manager complained that the referee allowed Marciano to headbutt, hit low and punch after the bell" Post fight complaints by C*ckell and his manager Simpson. https://news.google.com/newspapers?...AIBAJ&sjid=PpgEAAAAIBAJ&pg=7296,2185777&hl=en
But was it anymore dirty than any other Marciano fight? Without any warnings to heed from the referee how could we know a British referee would disqualify? The infringements were more a collection of warning type offences that together might warrant a DQ rather than any one automatic disqualifying incident. Without knowing if earlier warnings would have prevented further rough stuff how could we know Rocky would be disqualified in England? The only way we could know is if we accept that the English official would be as equally biased toward Don in England as the American ref was biased toward the champion. I don't think Don deserved such poor one sided officiating but he certainly did not deserve to become champion out of it.
Asking was it anymore dirty than any other Marciano fight does not condone fouls does it? Punching after the bell hitting whilst the opponent is on the floor persistant butting are all dsq offences world wide let alone in the UK. Bottom line Marciano was a filthy fighter and anyone who pretends otherwise is not in the real world.
Marciano was a rough fighter. He was taught to use everything to his advantage. He did continue to hit after the bell and punched in a way that he would deliberately follow through with any other part of his atonamy. Yes that's dirty and crude. I won't defend or excuse it. That's how he was. Mid flow he followed through roughly and followed on after a bell, and when you do that this is foul tactics. However, from an officiating standpoint this is more difficult to call when presented "unintentionally". The "accidentally on purpose" approach is difficult to interpret. At best the frequency of these infringements must be recognised and nipped in the bud as soon as possible by way of warnings etc. It is also worth noting that it is a very unpopular referee that calls every single interpretation of clumsy fouls.
And so did every other champion foul during title fights bar Alexis Arguello, Floyd Patterson and a small number of scrupulously gentlemanly champions. Marciano is the same as any other champion outside that group.
Pretty blatant. The most hilariously blatant headbutt I've seen was Carlos maussa's wack-a-mole style headbutt on Vivian Harris
The Brown Bomber was a true gentleman but Floyd wins this argument like Secretariat won the Belmont. 1) Actually tried to help fighters to their feet after flooring them. 2) Bent down and tried to comfort Ingo/Cooper etc. after almost killing them. 3) Fastest HW hands of all time? IMO absolutely but...we so seldom saw those 15-20 in row 'rat a tats' because he always seem to hold back. 4) Ingo hit him on the back of his head in the first fight; Floyd had the opportunity to do the same in the rematch but, instead, turned him around and blasted him. Back to thread: I love the Rock, an ATG, but Ezz was a better pvp ATG IMHO.
Marciano was known as a dirty fighter in his day. He hit after the bell and on the break. He would hit a man on one knee- rabbit punches and low blows. He did it all.
.......mcvey and i are in the same camp when it comes to marciano...a deliberate dirty fighter....nothing more to add...mcvey lists all the foul tactics marciano used.
....i looked at that one again...and he actually used his head to make an uppercut. ezzard's head snapped way back. it brought back a memory i'd forgotten. i saw this fight on closed circuit in a movie theatre .....the crowd really got into it then....and a lot of them...well, let's say a lot of US were screaming at the referee.
Very blatant, intentional, deliberate. I would disagree that Holyfield routinely butted like that. I've seen Holyfield (as well as Tyson, Hopkins and many others) routinely lead with their head as part of their style, a kind of defense/offense headbutting, pre-empting any clash of heads by coming in on the winning side. I wouldn't say it's wholly intended to result in a butt even, but to put the opponent at considerable risk and on the defensive. But what Marciano did there was another level really. He had Charles in a clinch, ducked in and loaded up and let loose a sure-fire certain-to-land butt in the face. ... and Charles didn't whine about it. :good
