For general fitness Olympic Gymnasts are conditioned as well as boxers. I've seen an article citing a study on this a while ago. They had Olympian level atheltes of different sports do generic performance tests (VO2, benchpress, chinups etc) and gymnasts and boxers came out on top.

yeah but why would gymnasts need exceptionally high stamina? the routines are arduous but always short. whereas extra hours on the treadmill will help out in sports lasting long periods of time (boxing, middle distance running), surely that time would be detrimental to the gymnast who could be putting in that time on perfecting routines.

I always thought that one of the attractions of gymnastics is the relatively less fitness work.

this is realy true about the top cyclists I am sure, but cycling is a niche sport even today - you need access to hundreds of thousands of pounds of equipment to do it. So theres less competition as other more accessible sports. If cycling was available to everyone, I think the top cyclists would be better than they are today.

yeah that's the truth behind why brits are still winning Olympic medals haha. we enter the sports like cycling that still price out lots of countries.

Tennis and soccer are good shouts I think. Then again, there are very few sports where the top dogs are not supreme athletes.

Honestly boxers are. Top level boxers are athletic in pretty much any way you can measure athleticism.

The power from a professional boxers is insane. Try getting punched by one of them. Their stamina is incredible especially when you get to the higher weight classes and those guys are running 5 miles in 30 minutes just for basic roadwork and you're like, but this guy is 185 pounds.... Their speed and quickness is incredible. Their hand eye coordination is incredible.

Tennis players are fit, but not to the same level as boxers.

Gymnasts also don't have anywhere near the power of a top level boxer. I'd like to see any gymnast ever generate power like a Julian Jackson.

Not really, punching and boxing isn't just hands, whole body is used.

If you think punching isn't tiring then you haven't boxed. The average in shape man will feel like he has bricks on top of his hands after 2 rounds.

they gotta be pretty high on the list.

its why you can never get a perfect decathlete. they need top power AND ultrafitness in one unit, and can never acheive both.
