Err Err But Just now you guys were saying a headbutt caused the cuts ROFLMO Just give up making false claims youre just making fools of yourselves
i never said that, and i stand by my statement. whether you agree or not. your opinion on anything means jack **** to me.
I've just re-watched and re-scored this epic fight in crystal clear HD over a decanter of the finest Dandelion & Burdock that money can buy and can't help but feel that Vitali receives far too much credit for his performance in this contest. After 6 rounds I scored the fight 58-56 to lewis 9-10 9-10 10-9 10-9 10-9 10-9 Whilst I respect steel jawed Vitali's performance of going toe to toe with Lewis, I feel that in hindsight it is infact Lewis' performance that is the outstanding one. A career heavy 256lb Lewis at the end of his career going toe to toe against a peak Vitali at the start of his era, and overcoming a difficult start to slug his way into the ascendancy, outfighting the young lion and cutting Vitali to ribbons with his ramrod jab and prolific uppercut. What happens after round 6 we will never know but what is for sure is that neither fighter would have laid down for the other in this pugilistic match up, its quite possible that we would have seen a repeat performance of the 1st 6 rounds with Lewis going on to win a 116-112 type of decision.
How often do you see someone perform the way Vitali did on short notice against the undisputed Heavyweight champion, suffer those cuts and continue to still be there all the way till he was forced to stop?
Problem is everyone wanted a rematch, Vitali did enough and deserved the chance at a rematch. A great fight ending like that was terrible to many.
I'm not saying Vitali doesn't deserve credit but that his performance is overated. At the time it was viewed outstanding but when you look at a fight many years later in hindsight and fully understand its significance and the quality of both fighters then you view it differently. I think many of the scorecards are wrong for this fight because they had Vitali as such a big underdog and the surprise factor effects the way they score the fight at the time. If you watch the fight in hindsight without the surprise factor and true recognition of Vitali's standing then you get a more accurate picture of each performance. Theres even a case for the 1st round being a 10-10 round so I am fine with 59-56 scorecard for Lewis also.
Btw Banger, what is your opinion on the upcoming Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight? :think The world needs to know.
Theres also a problem on this forum with posters not being qualified to post on a Team Elite Superthread due to having pathetically low profile view counts :yep:roflatsch There is a case for Vitali deserving a rematch but I don't think theres a case for criticising Lewis for retiring at that time, Vitali deserves respect for his performance but theres nothing for Lewis to prove by rematching if he wanted to retire, I don't feel Vitali had the upper hand :nono
