One punch..... Why is this even a question? Marciano had ridiculous amounts of power, work rate, stamina.... Top 5 easy ATG.... Layne was an excellent heavyweight, and the rock crushed him.
The first 5 rounds the Rock did his damage, did enough to wear out Layne causing him to drop his arms. Then BAM.... One shot and it was over.
The underlined translates into a gradual beat down. The commentator knowing the result says Layne is bullying Marciano , he then says later on it will be Marciano doing the bullying .Simple fact Marciano ran the less than top conditioned Layne,[the commentator mentions Laynes surplus around the mid section] out of gas slowed him to a walk and finished the job but it was the previous rounds that were," the money in the bank ,"for Rocky/He hit Layne with as hard or harder shots earlier on but Layne did not go down because he was still fresh.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5chxdyedNw Rex layne.. was very big and powerful, he is never given a lot of credit. Around 6 2 and 220 lbs. This man beat JJW and Ezzard Charles.. both legends.... The Rock smashed him down....Rocky could destroy large fighters as well as smaller ones.
Suze have you ever seen the COMPLETE fight? I bought it about 45years ago Here are the highlights of some rounds, watch Marciano catch Layne with heavy shots from both hands in all the rounds shown. Softening him up for the later finish when he is ready to go. .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5chxdyedNw The payoff punch was the result of the early punishment. Marciano scored only one punch ko as champ and that a highly dubious one in that I think the 39 yrs old Walcott could have gotten up.
Layne went down from one punch.... A very hard one punch.. He did not fall from weariness. He was OUT. Layne was durable and took some shots, but it only took the one to put him out for good. Had Rocky landed it in round 1 the result would have been the same.
He landed punches just as good in the early rounds, that is precisely my point ,watch the bloody fight!
That was a shot to the temple. That is one nasty area to get hit and very cerebral. Watch the delayed reaction on that punch. Those nerve endings just sent a shock wave to his brain. Rex was a tough dude and could stand up to a lot. He wasn't taking a beating and was in the fight all the way. If you want to see how tough he was, watch his fight on youtube against Bob Satterfield. Around the :25-:27 second of the film Bob drops Rex with an uncanny right hand and I am still stunned watching it that he actually got up from it and actually went on to win by a KO. Again, one tough dude. He wasn't taking a hiding but that shot was the perfect storm of power and point of execution.
One punch relieved him of his senses and put him on the canvas for 10 count. It is a one punch knockout. What else can it be? If this isn't a one punch knockout there is no one punch knockouts..maybe Jimmy Thunder has the only one on Tuesday Night Fights.
Another great one punch knockout that occured in the middle rounds after some punishment was dished out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD90WfoPvh8
