I consider Ali and Holmes to be top 3 ATG’s and master boxers. But they also had their hands full at times.

Ali had tough fights with Doug Jones, and Jimmy Young

Holmes had issues with Mike Spinks.

How would Vitali Klitschko do vs. the same opponents, and would the scorecards be as close as they were for Ali and Holmes?

Very interested in the replies here.

Young would be a tough technician but I favor Vitali by a decision, could be closer. Spinks and Doug Jones would get stopped by the 8th rd because he may exchange, Spinks would get broken down as well.

Vitali dominated Byrd but had some issues reaching and obtained an injury, he dominated but was not a blow out...Byrd survived the early rds. IMO Young was better than Byrd at what they do. I still see Vitali being victorious over all

Hard to be sure because Vitali just didn't have the type of career guys like Ali had. If Vitali had been hit and hurt in monumental confrontations with ATG fighters like Foreman and Liston he might have been less fresh even than these guys were when the dropped these *****.

If we use, for example, the Vitali that met Chisora we might have something approximating the faded version of Ali that met Young, not quite, but not a million miles away. In his prime, Vitali would banish Young (just like Ali would have), but at this stage of his career I suspect that Young might have been extremely difficult for him.

Spinks, too, would be far and away the best fighter Vitali had ever met outside of Lennox Lewis...I could definitely see Spinks taking seven rounds from the Vitali that fought Chisora.

Doug Jones, for me, doesn't belong in this thread because Ali beat him close but clear - I would expect a pre-prime Vitali to do much the same as the pre-prime Ali did. However, it is worth pointing out that at this point in his own career, Vitali was taking on guys like Levi Billups (21-16-1) and Julius Francis (18-6, 2-2 in his last four) so even Jones (Who was ranked when Ali faced him I believe?) might have come as something of a shock for him.

Assuming he meets these three in 2012, I would expect him to be a favourite before each encounter but I also suspect that he would drop a decision versus one of them, or be lucky to get a decision versus one of them. I think he would always beat Jones.

Where do people think Doug Jones would rank among Vitali's opponents? How many guys do you think Vitali beat that are better than Jones?

He decisions all of them, maybe a close or disputable decision or two in there.

I think it's fair to say that Ali and Holmes weren't at their best against the 3 named opponents. the Ali of say Williams or Foley would've had a much easier time with Jones and Young and the Holmes of Shavers I and Ali would've handled Spinks as well. That being said Vitali wouldn't...or shouldn't have much trouble with them either....Well maybe Young would be a pain in the a--. he's trouble for just about anyone at his best.

I find the inclusion of Jones most odd as Ali was 21 years old and had been fighting as a pro about 2 and 1/2 years at this point.

On another thread you argued that Vitali had to be given a three year pass before he was expected to meet top competition, even though Vitali was much more mature than Ali having started his pro career at 25.

As for Young and Spinks, I see them at about the same level as Byrd and in the real world Vitali lost to Byrd.

In the real world Byrd got the W,

with a giant asterisk beside it.

Did you mean the actual Klitschko that faced Derek, or a healthy version at that same stage of his career ?

And any claims of historical greatness for Vitali have the same GIANT ASTERISK beside it.

Losing is a weak claim for greatness.

Prime Vitali would probably have dispatched all three of these guys without difficulty.

But so would prime Ali , who fought one of them very early, (and despite what many seem to believe, beat him clearly,) and one of them well past Ali's prime.

And prime Holmes would have little trouble with any of them when he was prime.

I'm not sure what your point is here, Mendoza.

If it's to show that ATGs 'struggled' with guys that we would expect Vitali to beat easily, you need to consider the context, especially the stage of the careers.

Vitali would undoubtedly be favoured over Berbick, but so what.

I'm a fan of Vitali and rank him around 20 all-time (much higher h2h), but comparisons like the one implicit in this thread might (rightly) incur scorn/amusement/puzzlement/consternation, and lead some to believe that you might just maybe hold Klitschko in slightly too high a measure of esteem.

I mean that that version of Vitali was about approaching being as bad as Ali was against Young.

But in all honestly, even carrying an injury he probably wasn't as far gone.

    Ed,

Young lost a ton. If you don't want Doug Jones you can sub in Ken Norton who defeated Ali before Ali beat either Foreman or Frazier. Just take note Norton tended to freeze and go out early vs punchers.

Spinks, Young and Jones would be lucky to win 6 rounds combined vs Vitali. They would be on the defensive, giving up too much height weight and reach and wary of Vitali's power and activity.

Bottom line : I say Vitali has a much easier time with these fighters. Do you agree Ed?

I don't think the Vitali of Chisora was as far gone as the 'Jimmy Young' version of Ali.

But I also think that an asterisk, akin to the one I mentioned to Ed, needs to be put beside the Chisora bout if we are to use it as any kind of a measuring stick for Vitali's capabilities at that stage.

That said, I have problems with the whole premise of the thread, if I'm reading Mendoza correctly.

True. Byrd was lucky but he can become a part of this thread. 3 years as a pro, Vitali was well ahead of a prime Byrd with a torn shoulder reported in round three.

Byrd like Young or Jones was a good boxer who lacked size. I'd say Byrd by far had the best chin of the opponents featured in the thread.

Yet he was well behind on the cards and it would have a near shut out if Vitali was healthy.

Logically Vitali blows these three out. If you want to use other boxer types without a lot of power in Kevin Johnson or Larry Donald fine. At least they had some height and reach. Okay...maybe combined they won two rounds!
