Basically when it became a " popular " term it was to describe Sugar Ray Robinson. The theory was that if he and Joe Louis weighed the same he ( Robinson ) would beat Joe. Hence pound for pound he was deemed to be the best boxer on earth.

 

Armstrong has a case, and for a while I had him as my number 1, but I've revised my list since then.

The other three are in my 7-12 range. I don't think Gans or Leonard have cases. A case could be made for Fitz, but I think it'd be a weak one.

 

I don't think that you can compare SRR who I saw as a WW and raved about him with Joe Louis as a heavyweight in terms of speed and sheer flexibility...T'aint fair to Joe or any heavyweight
fighter as it would be to compare the average Olympic champion gymnast with a 200 pound gymnast whose sheer bulk makes it impossible to compete with the smaller gymnast. But if you say SRR was a better WW than Joe Louis was a heavyweight all things considered, that is another matter...

 

She's right though that is why the phrase was coined as experts believed SRR could defeat any boxer who he weighed the same as ie pound for pound
