He was ranked in the top 5, coming off a quite impressive KO win over Folley. Jones hit his brief peak during this time and I think could have troubled quite a few champions on his day.

Style-wise I think Vitaly would be all wrong for him, though. Jones wasn't a slick spoiler like Young, but rather a come forward counter puncher. And you rather not give up 60 lbs and 5-6 inches with that style.

But the premise of this thread is of course silly. Just wanted to pop in and throw some appreciation Jones's way. He declined rapidly after meeting Ali, but was a very nice fighter to watch when he was on.

Mendoza, you seem to reserve your appreciation for the champions of lighter skin color. So do you think any pro version of Ali/Clay would be KO'd in one against Fireman Jim Flynn? Or do you think prime Ali would be knocked through the ropes by wild swinging Firpo? Or even have the trouble Marciano had with old versions of Walcott and Charles?

    "Vitali was recovering from surgery."

"Vitali's first comeback fight was six weeks after Wlad defeated Byrd."

    Six weeks?!

I would have thought he would have wanted to be the brother in the ring with Byrd.

Six weeks isn't that long for Byrd to be made to wait.

These are the dates of Vitali's fights,

    April 4 2000----Byrd
    November 25, 2000----Hoffmann

    January 27, 2001----Norris
    December 8, 2001----Puritty

    February 8, 2002----Bean
    November 23, 2002----Donald

I notice Vitali laid off longer between Norris and Puritty, and between Bean and Donald, than he did between Byrd and Hoffmann.

It's not so much losing is a weak claim for greatness, as it's quitting is a weak claim for greatness. Still, I see Vitali beating all 3. Young, I feel gives him a good fight. Spinks would have his moments, but eventually the size disparity is to great. Edward Morbius, makes a great point when he states that Vitali re-entered the ring 6 weeks, after Byrd fought his brother. Vitali, I feel had enough of Byrd. Wladimirs athleticism allowed him to matchup better. The Klitschkos tag teamed opponents many times in there careers in this manner. Because of this both brothers eventually ended up with unavenged losses. Though sometimes there more fanatical fans seem to think of the brothers as one and the same.

Vitali was recovering from a surgery Ed. He wasn't ready for re-match, and Byrd lost to Wlad 6 months later. Perhaps that is why Universum selected Wlad. Vitlai's first come back fight was 6 weeks after Wlad defeated Byrd.

It is clear Vitali wanted the re-match!

Vitali Klitschko wants Byrd rematch in US

Former WBO heavyweight champion and current WBC No.2 contender Vitali Klitschko wants to come to America to erase the sole blemish on his professional record.

The hammer-fisted Klitschko, 31-1 (30), lost his WBO crown to slippery southpaw Chris Byrd in the most unfortunate of circumstances in April 2000 when he injured his rotator cuff whilst leading clearly on all three scorecards. Vitali retired in agony after the ninth round, but has thirsted for revenge ever since.

Since the day when I lost my WBO title I badly wanted to fight Byrd again, said Klitschko. I would love to come to the US and fight Byrd over there. He never beat me. He never beat a Klitschko. My rotator cuff beat me, not Byrd. Even though I was fighting almost one armed from round two on I was ahead on points.

After I lost the title to Byrd, my brother Wladimir stepped in and won back the WBO belt for the Klitschko family, but this is not enough for me. I want my own revenge against Byrd.

I'm longing for the moment when I can shut up Byrd's big mouth by myself, he added. I want the rematch in the United States. So Byrd will have no excuses left anymore after I beat him.

Klitschko, also ranked WBA No.3 and WBO No.2, stopped the durable Vaughn Bean in 11 rounds in February and now appears to have put that painful injury behind him.

How long does a recovery take? This web site says a torn rotator cuff takes 6-12 months before a return to sports. Again, Vitali wasn't ready to fight so Byrd so soon.

    Ed,

    Let's use common sense.

Fights take a while to negotiate and no one is going to agree to a date until they are recovered. The link I posted said the surgery Vitali had takes 6-12 months to recover from. He was not in the clear to fight Byrd 5 months after the injury.

As stated Vitlai wanted the re-match. Vitali had some shoulder / knee / back problems mostly due to him being an amatuer and world champion kick boxer, which is why there was a few months off between Bean and Donald. I think he had a back issue with Donald. If you think about it, coming back from multiple injures and reaching the top and staying there is hard. The Kick Boxing career cost Vitali a lot of time.

yeah lets use some commonsense. klitschkos always say they want rematches, and it never happens... but klitaards believe their lies.

you said floored, he said smash the shyt out of.

once again klitaard needs to change words of a post to make up a counterargument for it.

I admit to taking some pleasure correcting bad player haters like yourself. Wlad had plenty of rematches.

Among them were Thompson, Brewster, Peter, and Byrd.

And of course Vitali called out Lewis several times. Lewis said he would re-match, but quickly opted to retire once the WBC issued a mandatory re-match. As stated Vitali wanted a re-match with Byrd.

Now, what were you saying about re-matches?!

Vitali was too big for Jones and Spinks, and overpowers them eventually....Young frustrates him and wins but probably gets screwed again by the officials. If Byrd was able to frustrate him, Young would have been a nightmare....still, the decision would probably be gifted to VK.

It's not just the punches landed with benefits Vitali , but the force of the blow, who was the aggressor and such.

115-82 on power punches thrown is a clear edge and easy to score.

Fights are scored round by round, and Vitali won at least 6 of the 9 rounds at the very worst.

With out a clear injury, you'd have to say for sure; he would win by a more significant margin than the punch stats says.

If you want to judge fighters on injuries that did not happen from a punch, that's your choice, and you are in the extreme minority. Byrd could not believe the result himself.
