Not me, Buddy Baer wouldn´t beat Chuck Wepner if they fought.

Bold, are the only guys in top 70s form I would strongly favor over Galento at his best. Galento was certainly hot and cold, but the fit version that showed up against Louis, did a number on Nova and a few other contenders has a shot at taking out anybody else on that list.

Buddy dropped Louis, and beat Abe Simon, Mann, Savold, and Galento. He would beat up the man that almost did 15 with Ali. Why do people always say he went the distance with Ali? He didn't copmlete the last round, he was stopped.

Yeah, Buddy Baer gets underrated a bit.

But he wasn't what the old-timers call "a natural". He wasn't a natural fighter I don't think. For all that he's a sensible pick over someone like Wepner, he could certainly lose a weird one.

Fit version? Galento weighed 234'0.75lbs for Louis in June 1939 .He was over ten pounds lighter for Nova at 224lbs, 3 months in Sep 1937 ,214 for Leroy Haynes in Nov 1937. Fit my ar*se.

He was ranked no 10 in 1949, Suzie is correct and I am wrong Lastarza fought Marciano the following year.

LaStarza didn't make the Ring year-end rankings for 1949:

    Joe Louis, Champion
    Jersey Joe Walcott
    Ezzard Charles
    Lee Savold
    Johnny Flynn
    Joey Maxim
    Jimmy Bivins
    Joe Kahut
    Rusty Payne
    Pat Valentino
    Freddie Beshore

    But he did for 1950:

    Title Vacant
    Ezzard Charles
    Lee Oma
    Turkey Thompson
    Jersey Joe Walcott
    Bruce Wood****
    Lee Savold
    Jimmy Bivins
    Pat Valentino
    Omelio Agramonte
    Roland LaStarza

The end of year stuff was published in February, so he might have been; he did beat Brion, but Brion wasn't ranked either, so no guarantees.

He did go 8-0 after the February 1949 rankings. My own guess is that LaStraza made the Ring rankings in 1949 but unless someone can produce an issue (I know i'm not going raking over this), it's probably fair enough to use the End of Year stuff in the strictest sense, which would mean 1950 for LaStraza.

I think at the very least he would do that, if only on cuts.

There is nothing to do with they did both in their day... looking at them, I see a worse fighter in Buddy.

Buddy was a genuine solid contender, Wepner was a true journeyman. Buddy's best win was out brawling the tough Simon, Wepner beat Newmann. Its no contest for me, who wins this.

    I agree.

But what I'm saying is, Buddy was the kind of guy who could surprise you with a banana peel. I'm not saying it would be Wepner and I don't think picking Wepner to beat Baer is reasonable on technical or athletic grounds. That's my opinion.

Very little footage of Buddy. But besting Simon in a slugfest counts for something.

How about Duane Bobick vs Buddy Baer?
