Really? How about that Ike and Louis are the same listed height and wingspan at 76". Or that Ike is the only decent combination puncher with hand speed, Tua ever fought. Where as Louis might be one of the best and fastest HW combination punchers period.
From an old thread, my breakdown of Galento and Tua. http://www.boxingforum24.com/showthread.php?t=518623&page=11 David Tua is really a boring mute Tony Galento with better hair. There really is no other difference between the two. Galento was maybe smarter, boxed dirtier, and does have the better wins though. But you really can't rank one over the other, match them up against the same fighters, they would produce the same results, though I doubt Tua had the heart and craft to match Nova's dirty fighting and take him out. They had a similar skillset and technique really. Galento like Tua, was good at moving in low and countering the jab with a big left hook. And both went to that same bank over and over again. They were both fat most of the time, so moot point. Nobody is KOing Galento. Louis could knock anybody cold with one punch and yet his countless flush combinations couldn't put him down for the count. Check out :28 of this video to see Galento doing his thing..surprisngly very well against a master boxer. That's the extent of Tua's skills as well, guys. No, it isn't. Only if you are under the impression Galento was just a fat brawler and ignore his limited but effective skill set at setting up his money punch. Both were short strong guys with hard chins and one great punch. Unforunatley they were both predictable in strategy and erratic with their conditioning. I don't believe Tua was faster with any one punch or hit harder. They both were of average hand speed while in shape and hurt everyone they conntected their big punch with. No other way to guage it. Bigger? Both guys are about 5'9" and when in shape, weighed 220-230 when in shape. They are the same size and build. Galento maybe actually has the longer reach. This content is protected This content is protected Faster? I think they were both equally quick with the left hook and single shots, Tua was quicker with combinations when he bothered to throw them. Punched Harder? They both laid out the same quality of fighter with their best punch. Tony probably has the best single scalp in Nova. -Who did Tua really beat? Pre-Clinching Ruiz, a washed up Moorer, a controversial stoppage over Rahman, and a bunch of fringe contenders? Galento could match those accomplishments just as easily as Tua could match Mann and Ettore. Now Nova would probably beat the **** out of Tua though Galento occassionally did get in shape and as a vet of over 100 pro fights, did learn some things. He also talked trash and liked to build his own myth, no telling how much of his infamous "poor training" was exaggerated. I've posted a clip and video of Galento eluding the great Joe Louis' jab and popping up for some quick left hooks. Can you address that? A fighter with zero skill would not be able to slip Joe Louis and overcome a huge reach advantage to tag him with clean shots. And you do realize that with all his schooling, Tua rarely demonstrated much in the ring. He often followed his opponents around, getting under the jab, and loading up with the left hook like Galento did.
Up to his first loss Tua was always in shape and NEVER fat.......Galento was a certified bum..........and I don't even like Tua...........Galento would get murdered fighting most of Tua's competition. BTW, Mayweather will make look Pac stupid.....just for you.
How exactly do you get certified as a bum? After that, does your status as a bum get reviewed after you beat the living snot out of the #1 Ring Magazine contender? However many names you call Galento, he still surpassed Tua in one key respect. He beat some of the key power brokers in the division, i.e. guys ranked in the top five.
So? Galento wasn't fat the first 5 years of his career either. He might make him look stupid, but will he win? I don't think so. Hopkins made Calzaghe look stupid, but still lost fairly. So...
Some good comparisons between Tua & Galento. I would add though that Tua was unusually muscular, more so than gamanto, though maybe they both hit about the same. Tua a couple times was a high volume puncher, like vs. Ike. At his best I would favor him over Tony, though it is no gimmee. Tua did fight in a strong era.
Yes he was, just not as fat as he later became, and never in the shape Tua was. 1935-11-01 : Tony Galento 228½ lbs lost to Eddie Mader 185 lbs by PTS in round 6 of 6 This content is protected
Galento's best moment was not putting Joe Louis on the canvas, it was beating Lou Nova, who incidentally was much better than either Tua or Galento. Nova was a #1 contender, who was being hyped to the hilt, and a significant number of people actually thought that he could beat Louis! Galento was meant to be a routine fight for Nova, but he got himself down to an improbably low weight, and fought a very smart fight. That was his Douglas moment.
I don't know that I would call it," his best moment," he was absolutely filthy in that fight , he thumbed Nova all night and the referee George Blake, a well respected third man up till then, appeared blind to his fouls. It was rated the third dirtiest boxing match ever ,and it was Galento doing the fouling.
A good performance over a Baer who had gone back significantly due to his hand injuries.Baer was in front at the time of the stoppage in their first fight.
