Rating Old Foremans punch resistance

It wasn't so much his resistance. He had HUGE arms, and used the Mongoose cross arm guard to protect his chin extremly well. Most of his opponent's punches had to be looped around his guard. His big dome, eyes, and nose would take take a lot of punishment, get swollen up and bloody but he kept that chin tucked.

And that punch would have floored /ko'd lots of guys, possibly including the current champion.

 

Foreman was hit flush by quite a few guys including C**ney and Holyfield ,but he didn't go anywhere.

 

Old George had a great chin.

 

Holyfield lit him up.

He ate 260 punches from Morrison, 223 from Briggs, and 336 from Savarese - going twelve rounds with all three, all of whom could, at the very least, punch. Plus ten with Stewart, who could punch, and who shut Foreman's eye and left his face swollen with his punches, but never got him off his feet.

I'd say Comeback Foreman is nigh unKOable.

 

Hell, even Foreman 1.0, looking at the names he fought, only ever going down against Lyle (twice in a frantic war), Ali (exhausted, rope-a-doped), and Young (exhausted) - that isn't too shabby.

Foreman's chin is A+ without any doubt.

Yes. Tua had an iron chin. But I doubt that at his 40s Tua would be able to take punches from ****ey and prime versions of Holyfield, Moorer, Stewart, Morrison, Savarese, Briggs without going down a single time.

Foreman at 41-48 y.o. went total 70 rounds against them and never hit the canvas.

Young dropped him.

His chin did not get better with age.

but i've often stopped to wonder about it......like, looking at some of the shots old foreman took.

but still, what you say makes sense

i could never get my head around foreman being out for 10 years and coming back and doing what he did....defies all logic to me

It might be the single greatest accomplishment in the history of the heavyweight division!

 

With Foremans power, china and size he had the ability to come back.

 

Reading George's book again today, he said that C**ney really shook him in the first round but didn't follow up,and, in the second round ,when Gerry went for it, George had his legs back under him.

He said the punch that Young floored him with was magnified by him lunging ,missing a punch and walking right into Young's counter, the effect being increased by his moving into the shot. He said apart from C**ney the other punch that registered the most with him was from Lyle and that Liston's jab in sparring was the hardest he ever took.

 

All this is great but if he fought Lewis, Bowe or Tyson he would have been flattened .. he is fortunate w his legacy that none of these fights happened ..
