Will Mayweather make the same mistake as Algieri and Bradley?

Boxers have sometimes been called irrational, and Pacquiao's last two fights are the reasons why. Roy Jones said that fighters don't always use logic and many times temptations take over rational thought. I am of course referring to the fact that ever since the Marquez 4 fight, everyone and their grandmothers think they have a shot at KOing Pac...despite them having no real logical reason to support this.

Roy Jones correctly predicted that half way threw the fight that Algieri was trying to KO Manny. Everyone thought this was absurd. Algieri is a smart kid and a pure boxer with little punching power, no one could be that delusional in thinking that was his gameplan. But sure enough Jones was proven correct a few rounds later when Algieri's coach said this was exactly their plan. This was a shock, even a 10 year old would say this was a horrible idea, how could a world champion like Algieri honestly believe this nonsense??? Roy Jones simply answered that...it was something only a fighter could understand.

Go back to Bradley. Bradley who is a p4p ranked fighter, a true veteran with a very respectable resume and multidimensional boxing skills, surely he couldn't....nope, same freaking idea. Bradley who is a world class boxer still fell for the crazy idea of thinking he could slug with Pac and get a KO in the process. And just like Algieri, he ended up getting a beating for his delusions.

FINALLY we have Mayweather, the true legend of the sport. A boxing genius with the best Ring IQ. Surely Roy Jones's words will not fit him! Mayweather is smart, he is a mover, he is......STANDING TOE TO TOE IN SPARRING??? Uh ****. Here we go again. Video shows him being overally aggressive. Chopping would which is meant to increase upper body strength. Reports are coming in that he is really working on his power.

Seems like Roy's words will be fulfilled. Mayweather has said many times that he is desperate for a KO in his lasts several fights. Reports are coming that support the idea that yes, he will try to KO Pacquiao. The temptation to KO his arch rival in front of the whole world is just too great to ignore after seeing the Marquez 4 fight. It is completely overwriting any logical thought. At the end of the day, Mayweather is still a fighter...fighting someone he has seen been KOed in the past. And in the end....he may live to regret it.

Good thread. You bring up good points. But i dont think Mayweather will take a chance with Pacquiao. He's gonna remain at distance as long as he can. If Pacquiao manages to get in close or if he pins Floyd to the ropes, Floyd will clinch. Expect Floyd to look for Decision win.

FMJ owns Pac on the outside or inside....he will not allow Pac to be in the mid range.

I've always thought that if they ever were to fight that Floyd would try and walk Pac down and it would be to his detriment.

Floyd's punch resistance will be tested unlike it has ever been. :deal

So was it Algieri being irrational getting caught up with the fight and going for the KO or was it his coach's plan all along? If the latter is true, it's not really Algieri's "mistake" but rather his corner's.

Algieri lost because he kept trying to pivot away from Manny while he was within Pac's range. That led to easy straight lefts and right hooks from the far superior boxer.

Bradley fought well when he boxed and moved, mixing in body shots, but he would lose rounds when Pac came on and stole them in the last minute. Bradley would then look to mix it up and trade and that's never a good idea against Pacquiao.

Mayweather most likely won't make the same mistake Algieri did, but he may succumb to the same as Bradley, even if I believe he is far superior to Timmeh.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is one of the most cerebral fighters ever.

I seriously doubt he would fall pray to an "irrational" approach to the upcoming bout with Pacquiao.

He may be planing on "sitting down" on his punches more than he has in his recent fights -- to keep Pac honest -- but that doesn't mean that he is planing on going for a K. O.

I think Floyd realizes that he will have to bring a strong and robust offense to win this fight.

All this business about Floyd going for the kill is nonsense, mind games as usual. Floyd is too smart to do that and he doesnt have to anyway. Pacquiao will come forward and Floyd is a fantastic counter puncher so he doesnt have to be the aggressor to get his KO.

Thats if Pacquiao,s not quicker than Floyd can cope with and can deal with a near constant streams of attacks.

I think Mayweather will show different looks and make adjustments.

On another note. This is why I hope Roy Jones is commentating. His insight and fight ****ysis is unparalleled.

I think Floyd will fight in a similar manner in which he fought Hatton. Out of Algieri, Bradley & Mayweather, Floyd has the best chance to KO Pacquiao.
