Granted, this Paul Smith fellow would starch me in one shot, but for Ward, this is too easy. Ward should have picked someone with a name or an exciting feature to start his second comeback attempt, fight someplace other than Oakland would have been a good idea also.
Yes it's going to be a very one sided affair but Ward has been inactive for so long. The prudent choice is to ease his way back in with an easy opponent to shake off the rust. But I have to say as a fan of his even I'm running out of patience. His next fight has to be against a good opponent, not necessarily Froch but Groves the winner of DeGale/Dirrell or anyone else at the top level would be fine. He's wasted years of his prime and opportunities may not always be there. Froch could retire others could lose leaving him with no viable opponents, he can't do what he did with Bute and pass meaningful fights only for others to capitalise on his complacency.
Smigga is a decent fighter and good on him for taking this and earning a nice wage for him and his family but when you was as high as the number 2 in the p4p rankings you'd expect better.
Utterly shameless. It's little wonder that Ward has such a small fanbase when he carries on like this. It's funny how a lot of these top fighters - especially Virgil's two golden boys - keep declaring valid opposition unworthy whilst then going on to fight clearly unworthy challengers.
I dont mind this fight, its a soft one no doubt about it but Smith is no bum but should be no trouble for Ward. Last thing Andre needs is a sloppy ring rusty shock defeat. But once this is out the way he has gotta get his sheet together, hes one of the very best on his day so he really needs to have some days cuz he is seriously wasting his talent.
As far as fights after a lay off are concerned, its not terrible. Hope to see him step up quickly after this.
Better fight again in September and December with an opponent like this. Or take on a Froch or Dirrell type next fight out.
Paul Smith is the 2nd best SMW in his family and probably the 4th or 5th best SMW in the UK. Ward should have aimed a little higher for his comeback fight. However, Smith does have a decent fan base and is always in shape so you never know. If Ward has lost anything through inactivity he could be in trouble. But I doubt it. Ward KO within 8.
He's coming off of a layoff. If he couldn't get Froch, then this is a good fight to take to get back in the mix.
