Ward being with Roc Nation is going to complicate things for him in the future, assuming he stays at SMW based on the not-ready statements he's made with regards to LHW (sure, contradicted by his 2012 statements of looking to move up and eventually fight at HW). -Froch will retire soon, Ward won't acknowledge Carl's drawing power in Nottingham (vs London which was Groves' home - no way Ward-Froch goes to Wembley) -DeGale will not beat Dirrell on Haymon's turf -Dirrells will not fight him and vice-versa -Groves is with Sauerland (still sour from the Abraham fight) + staying in Europe waiting for DeGale to come back to the UK -Ramirez didn't look good on HBO, needs to build himself up before a Ward fight -Stieglitz/Sturm/Abraham are making loads of cash fighting each other in Germany -Gonzales is a Hunter guy, can't fight Ward -Bute can't make 168 anymore -Stevenson was able to make 168 a bit over a year ago but is now focused on 175 ...who does he have left? Chudinov? Jack, who's about to lose to Dirrell? Paul Smith's brother? Bika rematch? Gotta move up then. Wait, Stevenson & Beterbiev are Haymon guys... that only leaves Kovalev. So it's Kovalev or nothing for Ward's next major fight.
it isn't. he could get froch, but decided against. i don't blame him, either. there's nothing wrong with taking a tune-up after such a period of inactivity.
What about a first, easy fight at LHW? Washed up Cloud maybe? Then gun for Kovalev on HBO, his home as a commentator.
This fight makes perfect sense for Ward imo. Fight someone decent but not great after a long layoff. Assuming Ward still looks good in this fight then his next fight should be against a genuine top 10 SMW.
Ward has such a victim mentality. He doesn't have the perception to see that most fighters that have been in his position get treated the way he does. Instead he feels hes held to some higher standard. I like Ward, seems like a good dude, relatively smart guy, but he sells himself short by not widening his perception a bit. imo.
For a comeback fight it's not that bad. Smith's no mug, he's always in shape and he'll go there expecting to win, that's his mentality. Of course he won't because Ward's a different class but Ward should get some rounds in and maybe be taken the distance.
roc nation is beginners in the game. there gonna match there guys up soft and get gimme wins there big dogs to get a good start and learn . cotto vs geale and now ward vs smith
