Beating a great fighter in his prime is shockingly rare

Very true, like for instance do you Include Vitali, Castillio, Morrales, Barrera, Toney. I would have to say no on each account. Definitely all HOFer's, but ATG ehhhh. But Does that diminish now the resumes of Pacquiao, Mayweather, RJJ and Lewis should be viewed. I personally don't think so. For example (due to the big fight coming up, lol). Pacquiao and Mayweather have both accomplished soemthing that no other boxer has. Pacquiao titles in 8 weight divsions (all though I asterisk at least 2 of those, lol) Both are the only 2 fighters to ever hold the Lineal Title in 5 different weight classes. Both have at least 20+ former current or future champs on there resume, both have at least 7 HOF'ers on there resume. How can anyone ever question them just because they lack what is in the opinion of those as ATG fighters on them.

Now I guess the term ATG carries some subjectivity with it, personally for me an ATG is someone who would be considered one of the best 50-60 fighters ever in the sport. But once again, it's all subjective.

That's why I don't refer to guys like JMM, DLH, Mosley, Trinidad, Cotto as ATG's. They're all first ballot hof'ers, no doubt, but they're a step under the true greats of the era such as jones jr, Hopkins, manny and Floyd, the only 4 guys I believe who can classify themselves as ATG's for the past 15 years in boxing.

And over the years of all these discussions of ATG's it seems that a slight majority agree with it.

And with that, your agreeable list of the four men who are the ATG's of this era, you will see that none hold a win over a prime ATG. It just doesn't happen in this era anymore.

You also have your people who don't think Mosley, Jones Jr, and Morales are even Hall of Famers because of PED use, but that is another debate entirely!

 

There's not many ATGs, so it is extremely rare. And it's also something you don't have complete control over as a fighter.

 

Sugar Ray Robinson beat Sammy Angott and future Welterweight Champion Kid Gavilan at Welterweight. At Middleweight he beat Gene Fullmer and Carmen Basilio. Carl "Bobo" Olson may or may not have been prime when Robinson beat him.

 

Floyd has had TWENTY YEARS and anywhere between FIVE and SIX weight classes to do so. How hasn't he done such a thing? I mean this is his THIRD DECADE as a pro (90's/00's/11's).
