I like Jim Lampley but he embarassed himself that night. Not just at the end but the entire fight he was lost. He acted as if Taylor was doing a Willie Pep on Chavez when his face was a bloody pulp.
-(Then the USA doesn't deserve the benefit either, the citizens of America aren't any better than the folks that live in the UK, or Mexico, or even China or Russia for that matter..
Whoa who mentioned China and Russia? Crazy. Taylor should have won that fight based entirely on the concept of American exceptionalism.
It was neither a good call or a rip-off. Taylor today is proof that it was right to stop it but Steele was too slow! Chavez issued a brutal cumulative punishment that slowly broke up a superspeedy athletic fighter who "looked good" delivering points scoring punches in the early rounds. But fighting pro is not decided on points until after the final bell and the promising and potentially great Taylor was in decline in the fight and ultimately as a fighter and healthy human being long before those last 12 seconds. Hindsight is 20:20 but Steele's common sense should have alerted him to Taylor's state earlier. That the final bell would have seen Taylor a winner seems less than correct to me.
Yes, it was horrible. He even said in the 10th "Chavez is on the verge of going down". He was nowhere near going down.
A couple of things to point out. Taylor did PULL himself up at the count of four. He also did SAY that he was holding himself up ( holding onto the ropes) during his post fight interview. Lastly, amateur, and especially Olympic fighters are trained to DEMONSTRATE to the ref that you are ok if one is knocked down or given a standing 8. I would bet that Taylor knew this, but yet, he still did not respond to the referees questions. The reasons for him not responding can just be speculation by all of us but the point is that he didn't respond. The ref has no choice but to stop thr fight.
I will never be convinced that this fight should have been stopped. Watch Steele scream "you ok" in his face then a split second later he is waving his arms. If you are going to scream a question in the guys face at least give him a chance to respond. Steele just seemed like he was in a hurry to stop the fight to me
Great fight...Taylor took a beating in that fight...went to the hospital...he was pissing blood ...had IV's...etc. Chavez never gave up...caught him with the right hand....Steele looked him in the eye and kept asking,"Are you KO?...Are you OK?"...no answer....he did the right thing.Taylor's never been the same since...
Taylor had plenty of time to respond, when Steele screamed in his face are you alright, Taylor just stood there with this dumb, where am I look on his face, but then again I guess it's hard to talk when you are swallowing your own blood. The 2nd fight confirmed what we already knew Chavez was a way better and more durable fighter:deal
The end of the day Taylor didn't respond to the ref and to be honest he'd already give him the 8 count and was giving him a bit extra if you ask me. Lou Duva didn't help Taylor screaming from the corner distracting him. Anyone who thinks Chavez couldn't of caused more damage should take a look at the end of the Don Curry-Milt McCrory fight to see how quick Curry got over to him.
He go hosed. Steele knew there were only a few seconds left. There was a warning when 10 seconds left in each round by timekeeper. Chavez would not have had time to land anything.
