Would Floyds legacy be any different had he not created the "Money" persona?

Dude gets a lot of hate and some who are new to boxing forget the very respectful, quiet Mayweather. Ironically, at that time he was his scariest IN the ring and was an intelligent, lightning fast aggressive fighter. Unfortunately it wasn't making the money that Floyd wanted, so basically around the buildup to the Oscar fight he saw an opportunity...NO ONE was going to "out-good guy" Oscar...so Floyd played the villain, and it worked like a charm.
Now before you go judging his character...has he been an a-hole? Yes for sure...but to get the level of hate he does is unwarranted.Tons of other athletes have done as much and don't get the hate. Some have even KILLED people and get less hate.

Having said all that, how different would his legacy have been if he had a public persona of say... A dirty lying cheater like Sugar Shane...who everyone says is "such a nice guy". No one had issues with him getting 3 monster paydays without earning it, because he's a swell guy.

Disclosure: I am looking forward to the day Pac and Floyd retire. Don't care who wins, just want it done and them gone.

He might not of been the huge star he turned out to be if he didn't have that persona that made people tune in. I remember when Floyd was having trouble selling seats and everybody was saying he's a very good boxer, but his style just doesn't put bums on seats and I agreed. I thought that Floyd style just wasn't the kind of style that made the casuals tune in and then suddenly Floyd got some big fights and he sold them. He became the star, he became the villian that made people tune in. The truth is if it was for Floyd's gob and annoying attitude then he wouldn't of became the huge PPV star he turned out to be because it surely wasn't for his all out style of boxing that made people buy the PPV.

But he's not a huge star that's the point . Show his pic in street clothes to anyone who is not a boxing fan 90% of them wouldn't know who he was. Show ANYONE a pic of Ali EVERYONE would know exactly who he was.
My grandson knew him as , in his words, " that funny little dwarf man who fought the Big Show in the WWE He's not really a boxer is he"???? Though Big Show dwarfs everyone I guess lol lbut that about sums up Floyd's star quality I guess

Good post. Just out of interest, where do you think he would be now without that gob of his? Would he have got the fights he's gone on to win, and generally would we have all seen a different career path?

I think his career would have been similar, but he'd not have been able to pick his fights so well based on the hype he cleverly generates so we'd have seen some defeats. He's a great businessman, as we all know.

 

naaaah. i got no problem with any persona as long as he backed it up in the ring. what stunted his arguably mediocre legacy is his massive cherry picking and ducking of fighters.

I hope you sat your Grandson on ya knee, gave him a Werthers Original and told him that the funny little dwarf man was actually the only real fighter on the tv. The rest were just big, athletic actors playing pretendie fighters... and not really hitting each other.

 

He was a dick as PBF too, talked lots of shit to Gatti and Corrales, the only thing that changed was his moniker because he was going bald.
