I just saw that LaMotta, according to wiki and boxrec is only 5'8! What was the height of the average middleweight in his day? Was the MW limit the same back then as it is today?

I was also surprised by how few KOs he had, 30 in 83 wins, but that's another story.

    I guess average for a middleweight is 5'8 - 5'10

Hagler was listed as 5'9 1/2 but I think he was an inch or two shorter !

    How tall is Golovkin ?

Heights by Boxrec of the middleweight lineal champs since Hopkins:

    Bernard Hopkins 6'1
    Jermain Taylor 5'11
    Kelly Pavlik 6.2 1/2
    Sergio Martinez 5'10
    Miguel Cotto 5'7

Is Jermaine Taylor really only 5'11? I thought he was 6'1?

Anyway, LaMotta isn't a disaster measured against these. Especially if Taylor really is 5'11.

Old boy is still alive and going. Though he's probably shrank a few inches by now!

With the weigh in Lamotta might have made welterweight today.

Carmen Basilio at 5'6". What an indomitable will he had. Knowing he was going to have to absorb a ton of leather, to get inside and fight his game. That was one tough SOB. Lamotta vs Basilio, now that's a fight to watch. Jake Lamotta, even the name sounds tough.

As to the power, I think that's a function not only of his own mediocre power (and I don't mean that as a put-down; great fighters don't need to all be bone-breakers) but also a function of how hard he was matched throughout his career. Lamotta deserves big credit for fighting the really tough middleweights many others stayed away from. The good fighters don't allow themselves to be mere notches in someone's KO collection.

Not likely. He was over 160 as often as he was under it. Never seen a guy miss weight that many times. Eventually, he got tired of that and just moved up to light heavy. But he could probably drain down to 154 for a day before weigh in and rehydrate to around 163.

I don't think he missed weight that often just fought at catchweights a lot. Anyway I think he could, in an emergency,Clottey it but he certainly would be more comfortable at 154. But I think 163 is low; more like 168.

Turpin was 5-10 and downes 5-11. Minter is just under 6ft by in ring magazine during the 70s I saw him listed at 5-9 and hagler 5-10 even though minter was clearly taller.

LaMotta started as an amateur at a portly 190lb and always struggled with his weight.Rocky graziano
once said Jake was a lightweight with a heavyweights head.
